In a field that constantly evolves, Norwood keeps up to date with industry trends and technological advancements through a variety of methods. “Internet searches, reading articles, AI, watching automotive TV shows, and discussions with colleagues are essential,” he notes. Additionally, Norwood enjoys keeping up with motorsports and watching events like NASCAR, Formula One, and NHRA drag races to stay in tune with the competitive landscape. These conversations and sources help him to solve problems and understand new developments in automotive technology, which he applies to his own work.
A Defining Challenge: The Aerotech Project
One of the most memorable and challenging projects of Bob Norwood’s career was his work on the Aerotech project in 1992. This massive undertaking involved building, testing, and participating in an endurance event that pushed the limits of automotive engineering. “The biggest and most complex project I’ve ever worked on was getting the Aerotech cars built and running for the endurance event,” Norwood says. The project required an immense amount of coordination between various teams, including his own and partners at Oldsmobile and Batten Engineering.
Norwood recalls the 17-day event, which ran 24 hours a day. He worked for the first 104 hours without sleep to ensure everything was running smoothly. His ability to remain focused during the grueling process helped him and his team overcome numerous obstacles. “I handled this challenge by working hard and just focusing on the project and not being distracted by anything,” he reflects. Norwood’s strength in staying focused and not allowing distractions to interfere with the task at hand played a critical role in the project’s success of setting 47 world records.
Approaching Projects with Thoroughness
When beginning a new project, Norwood takes great care in understanding all the necessary details. He spends time with the customer to verify the job’s requirements, ensuring that all dimensions and specifications are correct. “I spend a lot of time with the customer verifying the requirements and dimensions of the job,” Norwood explains. This thorough understanding often leads to modifications in the project’s scope based on his experience and insights.
Once the details are finalized, Norwood assesses whether he has the necessary technical skills, team members, and equipment for the job. From there, he organizes and plans out all aspects of the project, helping to ensure everything runs smoothly from start to finish. Of course, some things always go wrong: parts don’t show up, or the wrong ones do, staff makes an error, some small, some bigger, or the customer changes requirements midstream. We analyze the issue and apply the necessary fix.
Difficult Decisions: Letting People Go
One of the toughest decisions Bob Norwood has to make in his role is letting people go. “Letting people go is one of the toughest things I ever have to do,” he admits. Recently, he had to make the difficult choice of letting two employees go. Both had been with him for several years, but in different ways, their work habits and skills no longer met the standards required for the job.
Reflecting on these decisions, Norwood notes, “I should have supervised them more closely and let them go sooner.” Though these decisions are never easy, Norwood’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of work within his team ensures that his business stays on track and continues to deliver quality work.

He started tinkering with cars at age 10, worked baling hay at age 11, and worked on his and friends’ cars all through high school. He remembers working at Libby’s Food Packing fresh out of high school, a job where he “learned that I’d only do work that I enjoy doing,” he says, recalling his dissatisfaction with the job. His early experiences taught him that he needed to follow his passion for cars, and he would go on to focus his career on what he loved most: working with cars and engines.
Self-Taught Skills: A Hands-On Approach
Throughout his career, Bob Norwood has continuously expanded his skill set, often teaching himself new techniques. One example is his mastery of Heliarc welding, a skill he learned on his own by purchasing the necessary equipment, reading instructional materials, and practicing on various materials. “I bought the equipment, read instruction books about it, and watched other mechanics do it,” he says. His ability to learn new skills on his own has allowed him to tackle complex projects and enhance the quality of his work.
The Secret to Success: Hard Work and Curiosity
When asked about the key to his success, Bob Norwood attributes it to two things: hard work and curiosity. “I stay up with leading technology in lots of different fields,” he explains. His curiosity drives him to explore all aspects of car building, from mechanics and electronics to fabrication and paint prep.
