There are words we say out loud, and then there are the ones that slip under the radar. The quiet assassins that live in our sentences, our tone, our apologies, our deflections. We call them manners, humility, compromise, professionalism, but they are really just self-betrayal wearing perfume.
“Should.”
“Sorry.”
“Just.”
“Can’t.”
Each one a small incision, slicing through our own truth until we no longer recognize the sound of our authentic voice.
We were trained early to speak in ways that make others comfortable.
To soften our requests.
To disguise our anger.
To shrink our certainty.
To apologize for taking up space.
By adulthood, most people can’t distinguish their real voice from the one that’s been socially approved.
The tragedy is that language shapes biology. Words alter chemistry. They shift our hormones, our posture, our decisions. Every time you say “should,” your nervous system hears I’m not enough. Every time you say “sorry” when you mean “thank you for waiting,” your body files it as guilt. When you say “I can’t,” your brain doesn’t question you, it just believes you and shuts the door.
We are living under a self-imposed spell.
And we cast it every damn day.
The worst part? We don’t even notice it anymore.
We call it being polite when it’s really being powerless.
We call it keeping the peace when it’s really self-erasure.
We call it being nice when it’s really chronic fear of rejection.
Language is how we manifest reality. Every syllable is a vibration, a frequency carrying instruction to the cells, to the world around us, to the unseen field that listens and responds. When we talk down to ourselves,
“I’m so stupid,”
“I can’t ever get it right,”
“I’ll never find love,”
“I’m too old,”
We are literally programming our lives to obey that command.
And yet, we were taught to fear the idea that words have power, as if believing in that was “woo-woo,” when in truth, it’s physics.
Trauma makes this even trickier. Because when you’ve lived through betrayal, violation, or abandonment, your language adapts to protect you. You start saying things like “it’s fine,” when it’s not. “I don’t mind,” when you do. “It doesn’t matter,” when it matters more than anything.
That’s not weakness, that’s survival talk. But if you never upgrade that language, you’ll keep surviving when you were meant to be thriving.
We live in a world that feeds on our self-doubt.
Corporations sell it back to us as beauty cream and antidepressants.
Churches translate it into sin.
Schools grade it as obedience.
And governments prefer citizens who apologize before they speak truth.
But the moment you start to listen (really listen) to your words, you begin to notice the poison in your mouth.
The small, habitual betrayals that say, I’ll dim my light so you can feel comfortable in the dark.
Here’s the reality:
You don’t “should” your way into peace.
You don’t “sorry” your way into freedom.
You don’t “just” your way into power.
You speak it.
You own it.
You declare it.
That’s prayer in its most unholy, untamed form, the kind that doesn’t wait for permission or approval.
So today, listen to your language like your life depends on it, because it does. Catch every “should” and replace it with I choose. Swap every “sorry” for thank you. Turn every “I can’t” into I’m learning. Speak to yourself as if your cells are listening, because they are.
Every word you speak is a ripple.
Every sentence, a spell.
You are the author of your frequency and every sound you make is sculpting your future.
If you want to change your life, start with your tongue.
That’s where the betrayal begins.
And where the freedom will, too.
The words you speak are not harmless, they’re commands.
They shape your body, your emotions, your future.
That’s what Meta Prayers is all about, reclaiming the sacred power of your own voice, and remembering that prayer isn’t always whispered on your knees. Sometimes, it’s spoken in how you talk to yourself when no one’s listening.
My new book, Meta Prayers, just came out. Grab a copy today.
Your language creates your reality.
Let’s make sure it speaks freedom, not fear.
As always loving and praying for you and our world,
Rene Schooler
