I learn a lot of new things recently and it has to do with the many failures and tough situations. The past month is a hell of a rollercoaster ride. There are major delays and setbacks in the company I’m with, a lot of office politics happening, etc.
With a bunch of things going around you, it is highly possible to get affected by people who spreads negativity. And as much as I love to listen and follow Gary Vaynerchuk, I failed to do what he does.
I allow my emotions into my work and spend so time focusing on what other people are saying, doing and thinking of. That’s not the worse part of it all.
I became too emotional and make decisions without considering the outcome. In the end, I hurt the people who cared about me. Here’s the thing though… I learn from my mistake but it was too late. Trust and friendship, once broken, it’s hard to mend.
It took me a while to figure out that this is a pattern in my life. Often, I make decisions to do something too quickly, and not weighing the pros and cons. Other than the recent mistake of breaking someone’s trust, I don’t regret whatever that has happened because it made me into who I am today. And I’ve learnt to see the sign of a hasty, bad decision.
Here are a few considerations you need before you take the next step in a making tough decision.
- Why are you making this decision?
- What was your purpose before this and how will it change?
- Are you going to hurt anyone with your decision? If you do, can you live with the guilt?
- Is there a better solution?
- Are you going against your moral beliefs?
- How would your younger self react to your decision?
- Will this make things better?
- What do you hope to accomplish with this decision?
- Will you regret it?
- Have you consulted an expert or a third-party?
If you can’t think of an answer for any of these questions, it’s best to clear your mind a bit. Go for a jog or a walk in the park, drown yourself in music, let yourself daydream or even meditate. You don’t have to rush in making a decision, especially if it affects others. We are in this world together. Your choice can lead to another person’s dismay.
If you have to make a decision and you know that it is for the better, do it. No matter how hard it can be, some actions have to be done.
