Do you ever feel like a quadrillion thoughts are buzzing around in your head, each one vying for your attention? It can be hard to focus and keep up with, even when you know that it’s important.
The solution? Metaphors — powerful yet simple ways to think about something.
While these metaphors may sound like something from a fortune cookie, they’re creative ways of seeing the world differently and more meaningfully.
Metaphors help us make sense of the world around us. If we take the time to think of the things we encounter in life as something else, we can come up with new and useful ways of understanding them.
Here are seven of my favorite metaphors that have helped me tremendously — I hope they can do the same for you!
. . .
1. You are a perfect work-in-progress.
It’s easy to get down on ourselves when we’re not where we want to be.
We beat ourselves up for messing up or comparing our “imperfect” selves against others who seem to have it all together. This can lead to less motivation and more self-doubt and self-blame.
However, if you embrace the idea that you are a work in progress, you’ll start taking more chances, push yourself harder, and see improvement in your life.
The more you work on yourself, the better you’ll become.
2. The world is your mirror.
This goes along with the previous metaphor — if you’re not happy with the way things are, then make a change! If other people are treating you poorly, it reflects your thoughts about yourself.
The more we take control of our actions, the less we allow others to dictate how we feel. We can’t control how others act — but we can control how we react to them.
3. You are enough just as you are.
We all want to be happy, but what does that mean? What is happiness if we’re trying to “be something better” or reach a certain level of achievement or status in life? What does it look like? How do we get there from here?
Seeing yourself as worthy just the way you are is an awesome idea. You don’t have to “be” something — you can simply be who you are every day.
Life is too short for perfection striving. Just live life to the fullest!
4. Your feelings are a compass that points you toward where you want to go.
This one’s very similar to the previous metaphor — but it’s with yourself! When we feel good, we’re happier, motivated, and go after what we perceive as success.
When we feel bad, we’re less happy, less motivated, and our energy levels drop. If we can control how we feel about ourselves and our lives, then we can pretty much control what comes next.
5. You are a treasure chest of creativity.
We all want to be creative — but how often do we allow ourselves to “be creative”? Our minds are constantly bombarded with things that might make us feel creative… or they aren’t. When we get caught up in the details, we forget that our brains are supercomputers.
If you want to be creative, then do whatever inspires your creativity! This could be anything from playing an instrument to taking a run, but nurturing what makes you feel good is important.
When we emphasize being creative overdoing something (even if it’s “productive”), it opens up a whole new world of ways to live.
6. The mind is like a parachute — it works best when open.
How many times have you heard that saying? Well, it’s true. To think in creative and productive ways, you have to be open to new ideas and new ways of thinking.
When we’re stressed out or afraid of things, we shut down our minds and restrict ourselves from “buzzing” with interesting thoughts.
The good news is that once we feel better, we can be more open to the ideas floating around in our heads — and see the world from an innovative perspective!
7. The world is a classroom — you are the student.
This is one of my favorites! We might do pretty well in school, but what about life? This metaphor will help you look at challenges, everyday issues, and health concerns as opportunities to learn.
Our brains are amazing — they can help us with things like maths and science, but they also help us deal with emotions and relationships.
If we put our minds to it, we can use the skills from life to help us understand things like health or business.
The more we learn, the better we get at looking at problems and figuring out ways to solve them. This strongly relates to the “making sense of things” that I mentioned in Metaphors That Change Your Life.
. . .
Many other metaphors are helpful, but these are some of my favorites. If you’d like a deeper understanding of these, there are several great books You can easily find them on intent.
