Like puberty isn’t bad enough, but some people have to go and write about it.
Go ahead: tell us the stories that it makes you shudder to recall. Because it is when you begin to tell the story that you are afraid to tell, that you think we’re not ready to hear yet, that you get our attention. Be specific. We all know adolescence sucks. How did it suck for you?
Was it not so bad? Was it, in fact, sometimes marvelous? Tell us those stories, too. Misery may like company, but it can do with some alone time. Was this a time of new freedoms, possibilities glimpsed for the first time, the realization of your preadolescent dreams? Were you still blissfully ignorant? How so?
Was puberty complicated? Was it early or late? Did it make you feel like a stranger to your body?
Are your boys in adolescence: are you a parent, guardian, teacher, mentor, leader, coach, or other role model for teenage boys? What do you wish the world knew about these future men?
The Good Life on The Good Men Project seeks your stories of male adolescence for an upcoming series. Submissions are due to Justin Cascio (email: [email protected]) by Saturday, March 16. Questions? Ask Justin.
