Many Americans proclaim that family comes first, but not everyone’s actions match their bold words. However, Kenny K. Myers stepped away from his established and successful business in Dallas a decade ago to raise his children in California. Ultimately, his family and his entrepreneurial career triumphed beyond his dreams.
Myers’ wife had passed, leaving him with a baby girl. Then, he had a son whose mother moved to the West Coast for a career with a Fortune 500 company. His daughter was old enough to miss her dad, and Kenny didn’t want to be an absentee father, nor would he separate his children. Instead, he flew back and forth regularly for a few months. That failed, leaving him exhausted and unable to help anyone.
That’s when Myers told his business manager, “Look, I’m going to go to California. And can you make sure everything’s okay? If you need help, I’m here, but I need to go be a dad.”
Basically, Myers pioneered working remotely 17 years before it became necessary when COVID-19 shut down in-person work worldwide. Still, it was even more than that since he played such a large part in his children’s lives. He calls it living the American dream because he got the best of both worlds, being closely involved in his children’s lives and innovating the healthcare business.
Myers did all the primary parent chores, being on the PTA, tutoring in the math lab, soccer dad and manager, being a homeroom volunteer, and everywhere else he needed to be for his kids. In the fifth grade, his son decided to be a professional soccer player when he grew up.
“We pulled him out of school and got him a professional trainer through networking,” Myers says. “My son is named after me. He’s Kenneth Kamizato, though, after my mother’s maiden name. So he goes by Kamizato with his soccer career,” Kenny K. Myers says. “He was voted team captain last year as a high school freshman and got an award for motivating his team. I’m super proud, and his mother’s very supportive. We make sure he understands why I’m not there all the time after being there with him every single day when he was younger, that I’m more busy to benefit him.”
When Myers saw how COVID-19 caused his community to struggle with healthcare issues, as many communities did, it sparked ideas. He sat down with his daughter Charlee Morgan Myers and asked if she would like to work with him. Their business, Living Fit Nation, provided covid support services, like health fairs and testings, for the local school districts in Orange County and many companies. His daughter is in college in Arizona now studying business and plans to attend law school.
“Charlee Morgan is driving me to be a great example for her. I’m so proud of her for following in her dad’s footsteps. That’s just so fun for me. I wake up every morning, and, you know, I cry just from being so thankful that I had all of this.”
Kenny K. Myers now focuses on providing for his children’s future. He may have received his bachelor of science degree in microbiology from Oklahoma University and his doctor of chiropractic degree from Parker University in Dallas, Texas, but he’s not limiting himself to healthcare professions. He’s working on real estate deals that could provide significantly needed affordable housing to the Dallas area.
