Entertaining The Idea
Rarely do I ever post a comment or dwell in the comments section of social media. When I do, my responses are brief and almost always dripping in satiric sarcasm.
In response to some armchair reporter saying on Instagram that if re-elected, Donald Trump could set the stage for a third term, I wrote:
“I’m just happy that I’m young enough that in my lifetime, the Cheeto will die and life will go on. Unfortunately the damage is done and once main Cheeto dies, there will be countless Cheetos replacing it, kinda like a hydra but made of seed oils, artificial cheese, hatred, and racism, forever trying to control reproductive rights and stacking the Supreme Court with Amy Coney Barrett’s”
So far, that comment received 235 likes.
I feel like a celebrity.
The Cheeto is a euphemism for Donald Trump.
I also received some interesting responses. Some faves were:
I’d rather vote for a Cheeto than a pedo
I’m just glad that I’m an old enough, white woman with no kids that doesn’t have to worry about this in my lifetime
And,
Do you really think you’re better off than you were four years ago?
That last one is my favorite, because it’s so broadly subjective. But I won’t be pretentious and respond only from a political lens. Exactly four years ago, June 2020, I was locked in my house because of a global pandemic that the leader of my government didn’t take seriously. A third or more of the country thought it was a hoax. Did all that happen because we had an inspirational leader guiding us through our darkest times?
No.
We had the political equivalent of Biff Tannen, but that’s a very generous and flattering compliment. Biff Tannen’s universe was built not on politics, but his own personal needs….oh wait, never mind.
All I’m saying here, is that we’re heading for another alternate timeline. One in which nothing really matters anymore. We’ve lowered our standards so much, that, whether we want to or not, we’re collectively entertaining the idea of having a felon hold the highest office in the land. What a tremendous example of what is possible in this country: that even buttheads stand a chance.
But when those buttheads go about it by cheating the system, say, by stealing a DeLorean, going back in time and giving a sports almanac to their younger selves, can we actually support them? Can we truly back them and say, they’re going to make the next four years better for me because they put my needs first?
