Changes cause us fear, but often the situation we are living through is worse than what the mysterious future holds for us.
Changes are not easy for anyone! Even the boldest feel fear when faced with a new, unknown situation that involves decisions and choices. Many choose the familiar, even if it leaves them dissatisfied. The courageous are only so because they prefer to take risks, to break away from monotony, stagnation, or a situation that makes them unhappy. However, fear exists. Probably, almost everyone, no matter how resolved they may seem, has fears — some more, some less.
Every change takes time to be assimilated and generates consequences, a price to be paid. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why many people hesitate to make changes. Familiar and controlled situations feel safer than those that are unknown to us. The new always frightens us and makes us distrustful… However, often the situation we are living through is worse than what the mysterious future holds for us. Thus, we feel that we don’t have many alternatives left.
I believe that changes only happen because something truly significant needs to be reviewed, looked at differently, or left behind on our journey. We can’t have everything; that’s why I believe that, in a way, altering the course is life’s way of forcing us to look at our own story as the only writers and protagonists, while also giving us the chance to rewrite it when necessary. We are participants in something that is solely ours, and the responsibility is entirely and uniquely ours.
As difficult as changes may be, they free us and allow us to alter the course of our journey. Rarely do we change our lives by sheer will alone. There are always one or more situations that trigger the necessary transformations for us. These are external factors, and we are exposed to many of them daily, whether on a more personal level or in a more everyday context, even if we don’t always notice them. But it is a fact that these circumstances arise for everyone, even if they are minimal or imperceptible, because it’s the way we make the adjustments we need. However, they happen in a way that we cannot control, even though we resist and fight against them. For some, for reasons unknown to us, they are more subtle; for others, they are noticeable and visible. But for everyone, they are possible, whether or not they are carried out depends on each person’s will and desire.
For each of us, they have their purposes, their specific objectives. I get the impression that they know exactly when and where to intervene. Of course, no one feels good seeing their life collapse over their own head, and we don’t always sense whether the changes will be good or bad. If we have just a glimmer of lucidity, we might think that it can’t get worse than it already is. However, we can surely assume that we are on the right path; after all, we moved, we took a step to break away from monotony, fear, complacency, and the laziness that takes hold of us, makes us unhappy, and hinders our growth. The effects of our movements take time, so we don’t always realize the changes when they occur; sometimes we only become aware much later, and many times we never do.
Unfortunately, we don’t see changes in a positive light when they first appear. Most of the time, we rebel and resist… We see them as something that arrives without warning, disrupts our daily lives, and knocks us off center without our permission. Thus, they force us, without any control on our part, to chart a new course. However, I believe that the most important thing is to stay alert while life gives us the possibility of choice because there comes a time when it tires of giving us opportunities and takes away that option, whether we like it or not.
