FXX talking dog comedy starring Elijah Wood and Jason Gann returns June 25th. Alex Yarde previews season 4.
Wilfred is a half hour, live action comedy about “Ryan,” a young man struggling to make his way in the world until he forms a friendship with “Wilfred,” his neighbor’s canine pet. Everyone else sees Wilfred as just an ordinary dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly yet irrepressibly brave and honest Australian bloke in a cheap grey dog suit. While leading him through a series of brilliantly twisted comedic and existential adventures, (Think Mr. Ed & Harvey have a secret lovechild delivered by Hunter S. Thompson and you’d be in the ball park) Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him. He’s basically a Labrador mixed with Russell Crowe on a bender. Best. Life Coach. Ever.
Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Happy Feet, Sin City) stars as “Ryan,” undoubtedly one of the most talented actors of his generation and gives Ryan a pathos and feature film level of depth you wouldn’t expect from a show about a man in a dog suit. But the wonder of Wilfred lies in the performer who inhabits that uncomfortable looking dog suit. Based on a short film that screened at Sundance in 2003, Jason Gann co-created and starred in the Australian series of Wilfred beginning in 2005. For the U.S. version on FX, Gann serves as executive producer, writer and as the title character “Wilfred.” The first season of FX’s Wilfred (U.S.) was met with glowing reviews garnering Gann The Screaming Banshee Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Comedy and a GQ Australia’s Comedian of the Year. He also won an Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award for Best Screenplay in Television.
“Jenna” (Fiona Gublemann),Wilfred’s owner and Ryan’s next door neighbor, is a local news reporter and newlywed and to her, Wilfred is just her lovable little pooch. “Kristen” (Dorian Brown), Ryan’s misanthropic sister, is a single mom who feels entitled to lord over Ryan and tell him how to live his life. These two round out the main cast and are also top notch actors. I’d be remiss however not to mention the infinitely watchable and scenery chewing performance of Rutger Hauer. Yes. THAT Rutger Hauer, (Blade Runner, Hobo With a Shotgun, The Hitcher, Ladyhawke, Blind Fury) as “Dr.Grummons,” a brilliant psychologist who offers Ryan some essential information~ for a price.. And, in a serious break with her goody two shoes CW Smallville roots, Allison Mack returns to the small screen as “Amanda,” Ryan’s ex who embezzled millions from their former company!
The fourth and sadly final season of Wilfred debuts Wednesday, June 25th the two episodes air back-to-back from 10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT.
