Beauty and the Beast is not bad, but it is by no means a perfect movie
I really like Beauty and the Beast. I watched the animated film a lot as a kid and it is a timeless film. A while ago I got to meet the cast and learn a lot about the making of the animated movie. When I heard about the live action Beauty and the Beast, I had hopes it would be good. I was able to see it early and here is what I thought of it.
You can read the plot for Beauty and the Beast here:
Belle (Emma Watson) is a young woman who is taken prisoner by a Beast (Dan Stevens) in his castle in exchange for the freedom of her father Maurice (Kevin Kline). Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and she learns to look beyond the Beast’s exterior to recognize the true heart and soul of the human Prince within. Meanwhile, a hunter named Gaston (Luke Evans) is on the loose to take Belle for himself and later intends to hunt down the Beast at any cost.
I had some issues with this Beauty and the Beast live action remake. The film is longer than it should have been, and it really drags on towards the end. There is also a lot of music, too much at times. There are moments when a character breaks into song that made no sense to me. This movie also appears to be trying really hard to be amazing, which hurts it in my eyes. I also wasn’t of a fan of ‘Be Our Guest’, it was way too over the top for my tastes.
Yet Beauty and the Beast is not all bad. The cast does a great job with their characters. The musical numbers for ‘Belle’ and ‘Gaston’ were wonderful. They are each full of life and the singing and choreography are top notch. The castle looked stunning, better than I ever expected it to be. It is dark, mysterious, sometimes dangerous and yet it has its charming aspects too. The sets and costumes are also really good, they fit the characters and story perfectly. Beauty and the Beast gets 6/10. It was by no means a bad film, but I had hoped it would be better. It just wasn’t a movie that took my breath away. It did get some things right, but not enough for me to give it a higher rating. Many people will enjoy it though, and kids are sure to love it.
Beauty and the Beast comes out this Friday. You can follow this film on Facebook and Twitter.
