The annual August gathering takes place in Nevada — specifically, Black Rock Desert — where some 70,000 people descend on a temporary city for what could loosely be described as an arts festival. In the last few months an unusual amount of rain in the area started to alarm participants, who feared lingering water and mud would force them to relocate. But the desert playa eventually cooperated; elaborate pop-up buildings and contraptions were erected; and the first day of Burning Man was officially on Sunday. The event runs through Sept. 4, at which point everything that was constructed will, as the name suggests, be burned to the ground. Although the environment ultimately cooperated, there have been a few lesser logistical issues. Traffic over the weekend was absolutely brutal: USA Today reported a wait of two to five hours to make it a few miles from the outskirts of the desert to the center of Burning Man. And though marijuana isn’t exactly new to the proceedings, its legality this year is especially confusing. The state of Nevada legalized weed, but Black Rock Desert is technically on federal land, which means marijuana is subject to federal law, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal. None of that seems to be killing the Vibe on Social. Over the last day, Burning Man has a 78 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
