There’s been a lot of outrage over the decision to cast the new Ghostbusters movie with an all-female cast. Our lovely Republican nominee for POTUS even weighed in. Check it all out here.
I asked myself: Do men have a point? Is it alright that originally male roles (albeit ridiculous, imaginary ones) are now being filled by females?
In order to answer this question, I flipped the script.
What if “traditionally female” roles of big, iconic movies were redone, featuring an all-male cast.
Bucolic Jane Austen films of domestic intrigue suddenly rebooted to show the men’s side of the story?
Yeah, I would watch that.
Small town southern ladies who bond at the salon in Steel Magnolias now, instead, small town southern gentlemen catching up over some brewskies at the local watering hole?
Yeah, I would watch that.
And what about the Big Kahuna?
Four smart, successful women living it up in modern Manhattan in Sex and the City suddenly recast with four smart, successful men looking for love (or lust) in the Big City?
You’d better believe I’d watch that.
Most of the X-Men, Superman, Deadpool, Spider Man, Batman, Captain America… They’re all men. They’re still men. There’s not a war on male superheroes.
Go see Ghostbusters. Enjoy it. Let it be.
There’s not a war on men here.

I’m not sure what’s going on here in this article. You ask, “Do men have a point? Is it alright that originally male roles (albeit ridiculous, imaginary ones) are now being filled by females?”, gave a few gender swap scenarios, and then ended with, “There’s not a war on men here.” It seems you are trying to say that the only reason men care about the fact that the Ghostbusters reboot was changed to an all female lead is because they think there is a war on men. Honestly you are not seeing the entire picture. You’re looking at the… Read more »
The fact you think this is actually about them being women is really the problem here. (Okay, sure I’m sure there’s somebody out there who is in apoplectics because women, but the idea that this group comprises literally millions of people is laughable) The first trailer (the infamous “most downvoted” one) sucked. It sucked. Even Feig and McCarthy (…eventually…) admitted it. However, rather than admitting that maybe they screwed up with it, the people involved and the media decided to make this into a political thing. They decided that any and all criticism of their little baby must in fact… Read more »
Men should be allowed to not like this movie and not be called sexist.
It’s not all that surprising that people who like women in masculine roles would also like men in feminine roles. Not sure that resolves the issue.
Stop whining? Be a man? Suck it up? Is that what we are suggesting? Judging men through female eyes? Is that what we are doing here? Personally, I could care less, but If not for the war on men there would be no issue here. if everything male, right down to the essence of who we are was not under attack, deemed to be inferior, this would not be an issue. If they were not pounded with such pithy sayings as “toxic masculinity”, or “the end of men”, and had not had any and all forms of male community invaded… Read more »
