Del Toro’s newest project, which began as a limited release and was given a wider audience in theaters starting last week, is about a mute janitor who develops a relationship with an amphibian creature at a top-secret U.S. laboratory in the 1960s. Sally Hawkins plays the janitor, Elisa Esposito, and the film also stars Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer and Doug Jones. It hasn’t exactly killed at the box office, with a domestic gross around $9 million thus far (it finished 10th over the weekend, far behind Star Wars and Jumanji). That said, The Shape of Water is getting some Oscar buzz for the performances of Hawkins and Spencer, and it is charming reviewers. The Dallas Morning News said, “It’s a finely calibrated film, brimming with romance, excitement and humanity.” Some critics were turned off by the strangeness of it all, but the movie has a 93 percent fresh critics score and an 85 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Social is right around that mark: Over the past three days, The Shape of Water has an 83 percent positives, with words driving the vibe like “intoxicating,” “stunning” and “masterpiece..” –Alex Shultz
