Lady Mechanika creator Joe Benitez makes a departure from the normal steampunk roots that is the character of Lady Mechanika and in this trade paperback, a collection of the while short series, the character is fully immersed in the Mexican Day of the Dead or Dia De La Muertos celebration that follows Halloween.
Before we get into the story, let me give you some background on the character of Lady Mechanika.
First published in 2010 and originally intended as a six-issue run, Lady Mechanika is the sole survivor of a serial killer’s rampage through London. Found locked away in an abandoned laboratory amidst various rotting body parts and corpses, her limbs had been amputated and replaced with mechanical parts, thus the name Lady Mechanika. After being found, she began a new life as a private detective with no memory of her captivity or her past.
Drawn and written in the Steampunk genre, Lady Mechanika was such a hit that Benitez kept going with the character, and now six different stories, the latest being the three issue series, La Dama De La Muerte.
In La Dama, Lady Mechanika travels to Mexico after the death of a loved one and is hoping for some solitude and alone time to gather her thoughts and mourn. But an encounter with an elderly priest sets her on a path to the tiny village of Santa CAtrina, mere hours from Mexico City. Instead of quiet mourning, she’s pressed into service by an innkeeper to help with preparations for the village’s Dia De La Muertos festivities.
This book is a combination of quiet reflection and the badassness that we’ve come to expect from a Lady Mechanika story. She does have some intense fights, but they’re short, sweet and to the point.
The artwork in this book is amazing and as would be expected from such a departure from the normal European-based stories, is completely different from the art Benitez and Martin Montiel normally create.
If you’re a fan of the steampunk genre or if you’re into Mexican folklore, La Dama De La Muerta is definitely the book for you! I highly recommend dropping what you’re doing and getting down to your local comic book shop to grab your copy right now.
I easily and happily give this trade paperback five purple goatees out of five!
