Sex sells, but did The Green Goblin learn nothing from ‘Body of Evidence’?
—–
Lars Von Trier’s latest, Nymphomaniac, opens in December, but the film is already creating a buzz. Earlier this year star Shia LaBouef claimed that the film’s sex would not be simulated, which is quite literally half true: From the waist up we’ll see the stars’ best mid-sneeze faces, and from the waist down allegedly body doubles will show us see how babies are made.
Today a series of promotional posters hit the internet, showing the likes of Uma, Shia, and Udo in the throes of orgasm to the delight of some and the amusement of others. Here are a few choice tweets:
@JulienneSalad Udo Kier and his O face is beyond terrifying. Thanks, Lars Von Trier@buddydean Lars Von Trier’s character posters for#Nymphomaniac bring out so many different emotions. I say they’re a success.@BayerJeff Based on the poster, I assume this is a re-imagining of THE BRADY BUNCH, just a little more adult

“On a cold winter’s evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi-unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway”
My god, why is it so hard for Hollywood to produce a movie about sex that doesn’t start off or end with some horrible violence.
I think the movie looks fun. However I have always been fascinated by fantasy and culture norms about sex.
I feel like, I dunno…if you want to watch a movie (that isn’t porn) that’s got real sex in it go watch Shortbus. The actual actors are the ones having sex, for one thing…not body doubles (which is kinda cheating). And it was an honest to goodness attempt to tell a story and use real sex scenes without making them titilating.
I am curious to see how honest the film will really be…If what Wellokaythen says is true… “In any event, it’s actually kind of revolutionary to have any kind of mainstream movie or any sort of mainstream advertisement have an equal number of shots of men orgasming as women” …then I agree, this might be revolutionary and refreshing. One thing I need to point out too, and agree with Laura…all the female characters, unlike the male characters, are looking young, beautiful, skinny, grey- and wrinkle free. This makes me skeptical about the honesty and sense of reality this flick is… Read more »
Given the uproarious gnashing of teeth and apocalyptic screeching when Kathy Bates disrobed to get into a hot tub in _About Schmidt_, I’d say Americans do not appear to be ready to accept much feminine corporal diversity on screen. And that may even be more true for female viewers than male viewers. Bates wasn’t even having sex in the scene, just matter-of-factly disrobing to get into a hot tub. I remember seeing _Titanic_ with an audience that was mostly women. There’s a scene in which Leo shows his drawings of nude women. Young, attractive, nude women I might add. No… Read more »
Yeah, that’s one thing I noticed in my lifetime. Guys will look at a woman and the response is usually ‘WOW” or ‘meh’, and thats it! Women ,on the other hand, offer up a detailed critic. I remember MANY years ago my mom saying that women present themselves (cloths, hair, makeup) looking for the approval of other women. Apparently , even in the age of Feminism, this has’nt changed.
I think closer to the truth is that women dress and do their make-up for a much more wide and varied reasons then what you’ve given women credit for. Sometimes dressing can be for other women. Sometimes it can be for other mens’ approvel. Sometimes it can be for their own approvel. Sometimes it can be a mixture of all those. Sometimes a woman just wants to dress to express something in her own personality that might not always get to come out. I can say for myself that being someone who does enjoy the trends that come and go,… Read more »
Well.. For one, I am fascinated by the human species…. I am, also, at times, pretty disgusted…. Hollywood is one of those places that conjures up this fascination and disgust almost simultaneously. Yes, in our confused, overstimulated, oversexed, simultaneously puritanical, culture…. we are talking about “things”, in general, more. This is good, I think. I guess I am kind of sick of Hollywood and it’s continued inability to accept aging women, (voluptuous women, small breasted, big breasted, bellied, etc.) as being sexual beings…. or… for that matter… beings…. Meryl Streep is probably one of the most amazing “older” actresses and… Read more »
Here, here Laura for everything you said. And I agree that fantasy has it’s place, but I am kind of fantasy-outed. I am tired that lately everything surrounding sex seems to be more about fantasy then it does sex itself. I am hungry for a healthier culture, a healthier approach to sex, better relatonships between people. Unfortunatly, there is a double-edged sword to fantasy. It’s healthy in it’s own respect. However, hollywood, pop culture, pornography in general has tortured the idea of fantasy by pulling, probing, poking, ripping, twisting, turning, manipulating, screening every possible form of fantasy for the ultimate… Read more »
Someone needs to say this out loud. I’ll do it. Ready? For many people, watching and hearing a fake orgasm on screen is very arousing. It’s even more arousing when the people are good-looking celebrities whom one may have already pictured in such a state. I don’t really want my fantasies to be entirely realistic, because then they stop being fantasies. I’m not sure there’s much of a movie market out there for entirely realistic sexual portrayals. Like Hollywood is going to capture that unmistakable “plop” sound of a tied-off used condom hitting a wood floor after sex, or the… Read more »
That a great, fresh perspective. Thanks for weighing in.
I meant “orgasms” not “organisms”. Movie organisms are also unrealistic, but that’s a separate discussion.
Well, I want to see this movie.
Uma Thuman is a goddess.
I don’t disagree, Erica. Uma is quite lovely.
They are actors/actrises right? They should be able to fake an orgasm. So what is the point of it? It is just a part of marketing which I am not buying…on the other hand it suits to the title 🙂
“A part of marketing I’m not buying.” Thank you, Ozlem, I think that’s the most interesting question. When these hit the internet yesterday they certainly caused a buzz, which arguably makes them successful marketing. On the other hand, arguably they’re in poor taste and manipulative, which makes them unsuccessful marketing.
Hustling sex to pick our pockets is a long-standing con, but as I mentioned to Bobbt above, it seems we’re in some sort of arms escalation to see who can sink the lowest.
Seems like the perfect time for Vincent Gallo’s “Brown Bunny” to be re- released.
Hi James
You ask :
✺ “Click the photos to see them full-sized, and when
you’re done let us know what you think”✺
You want to know what I think?
I think this is an issue not worth talking about ,not interesting enough to write an article about.
I don’t care if their orgasm was real or faked. Who cares?
See my response to Ozlem below if you’d like, or feel free to find an article that is of greater interest to you. We have hundreds to choose from.
Hi James
If the hundred article you refer to are articles here on GMP then I can assure you that I have read a lot of them,
OK, first we have the ‘Male Stripper’ movie (Magic Mike). Then we have a movie starring an honest to goodness ‘Porn Star’ ( James Deen in ‘The Canyons’ ). Then we have a bio pic (supposedly) about a ‘specially’ gifted ‘Porn Star (I forgot the title ,but it’s about Linda Lovelace). Oh, don’t forget the ‘Mommy Porn’ movie due out soon (50 shades of Grey). And now this movie with ‘Non Simulated’ sex. Is it just me or does anyone else see a pattern here?
It really seems like an arms escalation of titillation, doesn’t it?
That film about Linda Lovelace is a tragic, heartbreaking movie about rape and exploitation. Just to be clear. It’s definitely NOT about titillation.
I can’t say different since I didn’t actually see it (just read the reviews from someone who’s opinion I trust) but still I wonder how much of the audience was drawn to this movie because of her ‘work’ in the ’70’s porn industry?
By the looks of things, Mia Goth is the only woman in the film who has ever had a real orgasm.
Fingers crossed it wasn’t with Stellan Skarsgård.
Idk. My girlfriend has had that Connie Nielson face before. And I can attest to the Stellan Skarsgård face.
