The Light Between Oceans has a strong beginning but goes downhill from there
I have seen some great dramatic films. These types of movies like to tackle tough stories and with the right casting choices they can be amazing. Yet this is not always the case. When they try too hard to tell a darker story this can be a recipe for disaster. I was able to see The Light Between Oceans this week and here is what I thought of it.
You can read the plot for The Light Between Oceans here:
A couple (Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander) who reside in an Australian lighthouse discover a baby in a boat along with a dead body. They decide to raise the child, a choice that leads to devastating consequences.
I wanted to really like The Light Between Oceans, but this just wasn’t possible. I didn’t hate it, but I definitely had some issues with it. Once the child comes into the picture the main characters took the film to an odd place. They try their best to become a happy, normal family somehow knowing this will never truly happen for either of them. I also found it hard to feel much of anything for them once they decided to take this baby as their own. The film takes a couple of strange turns once the child grows up from a baby to a toddler and then a small child. As it progressed from here the film only makes less sense. Add an ending that jumps way ahead in time and you get an okay film that isn’t always easy to follow. Some people may like it, others may even love it. Yet most will find it too strange to like it that much.
The Light Between Oceans gets 6/10. It was not awful but it was not as good as I had hoped it would be. It has a great cast and a clever story but somehow it became nothing more than an alright film. This is sadly another film based off a book where I am pretty sure the book is better. It will definitely not be for everyone and most people should just avoid it altogether. It is a shame too, if a few things had been tweaked this could have been a really good romantic film.
People who have read the book may want to check this film out. Fans of these stars should check see this movie this weekend. Anyone else should just skip this one, they aren’t missing out on much. The Light Between Oceans comes out today. You can follow The Light Between Oceans on Facebook and Twitter.
