About John Hearn
John Hearn, a teacher at Jamestown Community College, is the recipient of the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship. He has published on a number of topics, including fatherhood and the social and political participation of African Americans, and in a number of publications, including Social Science Quarterly, Religion and Politics, Epoch, The Washington Post, and The Buffalo News. A Glimmer Train Honorable Mention for the 2013 Short Story Award for New Writers is among his commendations.
In 2011 he wrote, with a student, Shade It Black: Death and After in Iraq (Casemate). That book reached # 321 on amazon.com’s best-seller list, is assigned to students at many colleges and universities, including Brown, and was Miami University’s 2012 Summer Reading program selection. It has been the subject of a good deal of praise (see shadeitblack.com) and has been optioned to a filmmaker.
