Working from home can allow you to save time and money on everything from the morning commute to shopping for new office attire. However, if you have been working in a professional setting for a long time, it can be difficult to make the adjustment. Without a plan in place, it can be easy to slack off. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to ensure that working from home doesn’t go from a dream job to a nightmare.
1. Find Effective Communication Tools
One of the things that can make it hard for people to adjust to working from home is the lack of interaction with others. While you may be alone most of the time, that does not mean you won’t be able to interact with coworkers or clients.
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to communication methods. Some employees may want to look into getting VoIP phones for home, while others are more comfortable sending emails or using video conferencing programs. Figure out what works best for you when setting up your office.
2. Make a Schedule
A perk of working from home is being able to create a flexible schedule. Taking a shower on your lunch break or deciding to sleep in on a Friday can be nice, but it is easy to get carried away. A set schedule can help you stay on task and meet your daily goals without having to work late into the evening.
There are many free calendar applications that can be used online or on a smartphone or tablet. If you would rather write appointments down by hand, then find a printable calendar online or buy a planner.
3. Prep Meals Ahead of Time
When you’re at the office, you get to enjoy a set lunch break. At home, it may be tempting to turn a quick lunch break into an elaborate meal. After that, the dishes will be calling and from there you can get sucked into more chores. Preparing lunches ahead of time will allow you to eat quickly and get back to work in a timely manner.
4. Create a Home Office Space
People tend to associate certain areas with related tasks. Bedrooms are for sleeping, bathrooms are for showering, and so on. Designating an area to function solely as a home office can help you get in the zone faster and work more efficiently.
It is not necessary to clear out an entire room, especially if space is an issue. A simple workstation that is dedicated to work activities can be enough.
5. Limit Distractions
Children and pets can be big distractions while you are trying to work. While it may not be possible to find someone to watch the children, you may be able to find enough for them to play with to keep them occupied for long periods of time. Before starting to work, make sure that any pets or children are taken care of and have enough to do while you work.
Even if you are alone during the day, or there are adults in the house, distractions can crop up. Let everyone know that you will be unavailable during work hours and ask that they be considerate. If necessary, hang up a curtain to block off other areas of the house visually so you can concentrate.
Block social media platforms from your work computer, or log out of them and remove any bookmarks to lower the temptation to browse your feeds.
Everyone experiences slumps in productivity from time to time. However, it is possible to do excellent work from a home office as long as you are able to limit distractions and stick to a schedule.
