One of the reasons superhero movies are so popular right now is the idea a costume change can radically alter your identity: Peter Parker becomes Spiderman, Diana Prince becomes Wonder Woman, and Tony Stark becomes Iron Man. Put on the mask or wield that shield, and you’re not just a civilian anymore (although some superheroes never were). In fact, your friends and family might not even recognize you once you assume your alter ego. It’s a thrilling idea that’s moved fans to attend comic book movie screenings dressed as their favorite superheroes, and it’s also one of the several reasons costumes for adults are more popular than ever right now.
More Options for More People
You might be thinking Halloween is the only appropriate time for adults to dress up, but that ignores just how much the culture has changed in recent years. Whether it’s at a comic book convention or a theme party, people can’t get enough of costumes. The Internet has been a boon to this movement, as a plethora of costume shops have sprung up online to serve customers needs year-round. People no longer have to rely solely on the sometimes-cheesy storefronts that pop up every year around Labor Day and close immediately after Halloween. It turns out not everyone wants to dress up as a zombie or a sexy nun, and the market has responded to that. Online stores can also offer expanded sizing that’s hard to find in brick and mortar locations.
The options available online can be a bit of a double-edged sword, however. Make sure you’re visiting a reputable website, not one that just wants to take your money and provide bad service. Check out the way the website is laid out to make sure there are no red flags, such as a lot of typos or pop-ups. Companies that hire experts to assist with the website design often offer a more user-friendly experience, while companies that go at it alone can end up with a confusing mess that makes you want to click “X” as fast as possible to get out of there.
A few years ago, someone who wanted to attend a costume party in the spring had to look for something at a thrift store or hope they had something in the back of their closet that would do. That’s no longer the case.
Current events are enough to stress anybody out, which makes the idea of slipping on a costume and getting away from it all even more appealing. Who has time to think about nuclear war when you’re dressed up like a flapper from the Roaring Twenties? (Nevermind the Great Depression.)
The variety of options means more couples and families can get together and coordinate their costumes. If you want to tell the world that you’re truly made for each other, why not dress up like Peanut Butter and Jelly? If you’re feeling patriotic, you and your partner can go as Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam. The combinations are almost endless. If you have an idea for a costume, there’s probably someone willing to sell it to you, assuming it remains somewhat within the bounds of good taste (although even that will vary from place to place).
More and more people are realizing there is no upper age limit to imagination. Sure, it’s fun to be a kid and dress up as a Ninja Turtle and go trick-or-treating, but as an adult, you have a wider range of social occasions and a bigger bank account. So put on your favorite costume and get ready to have a ball.
