The hard part of being empowered is consistent effort. It’s easy to feel strong and powerful for an hour, a day, maybe even a week. Making a lasting change, to have real effect on your life, takes time. Time is the enemy of personal change.
Nothing of value comes quickly. Education, health, experience, strength – all take consistent effort. I don’t lose 10 pounds if I eat only broccoli for a day. I can’t earn a Master’s Degree in a week, and 10 years’ experience takes 10 years.
The call of distraction, just a little “something sweet”, or a new path will keep us from our goals. This is why having accountability is important. Whether it’s a partner, spouse or coach. For business success, the coach is important for three reasons, 1) they’re not emotionally engaged the way business partners and spouses are so brutal honesty is possible 2) they should bring experience that you lack and 3) they create accountability and keep their students on track.
This week I’m traveling to Raleigh, N. Carolina to spend two days in a conference room with my mentee Rain Bennett. We’re doing my Deeper Dive weekend. This is the follow up to the Deep Dive weekend we did in June. That experience left Rain with an action plan that he put in motion. This weekend is the next phase, with a review of what worked so far, and what needs adjusting. By the end of the two days, there will be another actionable plan to move the ball down the field towards the goals we set in June.
Rain’s dedication to the process is making his dreams and goals come true. As a filmmaker, he knows that you have to keep the subject in focus. That’s why we speak and text each other often. This coming weekend will be long and tiring, also invigorating and exciting for both of us. Every time he accomplishes a check mark, it gives me as the coach/mentor a feeling of accomplishment as well. Seeing his growth means that what I’m doing has value and meaning; which helps me stay motivated as well.
