The Commerce Dept. has the authority to grant such exemptions, but companies are allowed to file formal objections, as Charlotte-based Nucor and Pittsburgh-based United States Steel have some 1,600 times, according to The New York Times. Commerce officials say no exemptions have been granted to any company if an objection was filed against it. Both Nucor and U.S. Steel have ties to Trump officials, and that fact is just one among many driving down opinions about the tariffs. Currently, Trump’s tariffs are collecting 71 percent negatives, with one factor being the adverse effects the policy is having on small companies. Meantime, the chief target of the Trump tariffs is crowing about its steely resolve to resist and fight back. Bloomberg reported on Sunday that Chinese state media have boasted of the country’s willingness to endure the trade war and that the People’s Republic is already preparing more retaliatory tariffs. –Hugo Guzman
