From insane surfers meeting great white sharks to famous musicians getting attacked…stay
00:04
tuned to number 1 to find out 10 of the most amazing shark attack survival stories, you’ve
00:09
ever heard!
00:22
Number 10: James Grant.
00:24
James Grant was spending time in New Zealand’s South Island, spearfishing with his friends,
00:29
when he was suddenly attacked by a shark!
00:31
He wasn’t sure what kind of shark it was, but it was probably a sevengill.
00:35
All of a sudden, James felt something pulling his leg; his initial reaction was “Oh, it’s
00:41
probably a friend of mine joking around.”
00:43
Well, it was no friend.
00:45
And it certainly wasn’t joking around.
00:48
The problem was that James simply didn’t see the shark approaching.
00:51
When he realized what was happening, the shark was already there, biting his leg.
00:55
Luckily, James had a knife in his hand, and he used it immediately.
00:59
He started stabbing the shark in the head.
01:01
Because of the multiple stabs, or the general shock to the shark, the animal went away.
01:06
But what’s even luckier is that James Grant is a doctor, and he immediately started stitching
01:11
himself up when he reached the shore.
01:13
He came for spearfishing, but he ended up shark-stabbing.
01:17
Number 9: David and Sebastian Cozzan.
01:20
Do you know the old saying “Lightning never strikes the same place twice?”
01:24
Well, it depends, really, because sometimes very strange things can happen.
01:29
In March 2014, Sebastian Cozzan, who was only 14 years old at the time, was enjoying the
01:34
surf in Palm Beach, Florida when he was attacked by a shark.
01:38
The shark grabbed the boy’s right foot, and it was a severe bite.
01:42
Sebastian started hitting the shark and fighting it off, and he did manage to get away.
01:46
However, the bite was very bad, and it required 80 stitches.
01:50
Now, what’s really amazing is that the boy’s father, David Cozzan, was also attacked by
01:56
a shark…the attack had taken place twenty years earlier, but it was at the exact same
02:00
spot.
02:01
Not only that, but the shark that went for Sebastian’s father also got his foot.
02:05
Only, in his case, it was the left foot, not the right.
02:09
What an amazing coincidence!
02:12
Number 8: Todd Endris.
02:14
On August 28, 2007, in the waters of California, Todd Endris came to surf, as he always did.
02:20
For him, it was supposed to be just another ordinary surfing day.
02:24
But it wasn’t.

02:37
So, Todd Endris was on just another ordinary day of surfuing, but, before he realized what
02:42
was happening, he was attacked by a shark.
02:44
Todd was fighting, hitting the shark with his fist and foot, but the shark kept coming
02:49
back.
02:50
In all, the shark attacked him a total of three times, and cut him pretty badly.
02:54
He lost almost half of his blood, and it seemed like his life would end right there.
02:59
Enter…the dolphins.
03:01
All of a sudden, a group of dolphins came close to Todd, and began forming a circle
03:05
around him.
03:06
It was the best defense, and the best distraction for the shark, because Todd was able to swim
03:10
back to shore and get the attention of his friends and some lifeguards who immediately
03:14
helped him.
03:15
But if it wasn’t for dolphins…he most likely would have lost his life.
03:19
As Todd has later told many times, these beautiful creatures were jumping around him, and circling
03:24
his surf board, until he reached the beach.
03:27
Pretty amazing, right?
03:28
Number 7: Henri Bource.
03:32
Henri Bource was a rock and roller, in every sense of the word.
03:35
Not only did he play the saxophone in a rock group from the 1960s called The Thunderbirds,
03:40
but he also survived a shark attack and has retold the tale countless times.
03:44
The shark attack took place on November 29, 1964, when Henri was busy filming footage
03:49
for an underwater documentary in Australia.
03:52
It was then that a great white shark came at him, grabbing his left leg just below the
03:57
knee.
03:58
Henri fought as much as he could, but it wasn’t enough.
04:00
The great white took his leg.
04:02
What’s amazing is that all of this happened during the actual filming of the documentary,
04:06
and Henri Bounce didn’t want to stop shooting.
04:08
He actually ordered his crew to keep on shooting, determined to get every possible shot for
04:13
the upcoming documentary.
04:14
And they even managed to film Henri’s leg, floating around in the ocean, because the
04:19
shark simply left it there right after the bite.
04:21
Henri Bource came back to the ocean less than two months later, and he finished his documentary.
04:26
And he also continued playing with the band.
04:29
For him, it was all rock and roll!
04:32
Number 6: Rodney Fox.
04:34
In December of 1963, Rodney Fox was spearfishing in Australia, when he was bitten by a huge
04:40
great white shark.
04:41
The shark pulled Fox underwater, for some 30 feet.
04:45
Needless to say, Fox fought back, trying to get away from the beast’s jaws, and he finally
04:49
managed to do it.
04:51
He quickly started swimming back to the surface, but the shark kept at him, biting on his boat
04:55
as well.
04:56
Rodney Fox suffered a terrible bite, but he somehow managed to reach the hospital.
05:01
Upon arrival, doctors immediately did everything in their power to save him, which they did.
05:07
His ribs were broken, his lung ripped open and his diaphragm punctured.
05:11
Also, his whole abdomen was exposed and, as doctors later told him, he was literally minutes
05:17
away from dying of severe blood loss.
05:20
It took staggering 462 stitches to sew him back together.
05:24
But…Rodney worked against his fear and got back into the water.
05:28
He became an ocean researcher and conservationist, making shark documentaries and being a consultant
05:33
for the majority of films on great white sharks.
05:36
Talk about a turn of events!
05:39
Number 5: Shannon Ainslie.
05:42
Shark attacks happen very rarely, even though it seems like they’re in the news all the
05:45
time.
05:46
But sometimes, two sharks can attack at the same time.
05:50
This is precisely what happened to Shannon Ainslie.
05:52
In 2000, Shannon was surfing in the waters of South Africa, and it was there that two
05:58
great white sharks, 15 feet each, attacked her.
06:01
As we said, this is one in million type of occurrence, but that just what happened to
06:05
the 15-year-old Shannon.
06:07
One of the sharks grabbed Shannon and started pulling him down, and the other one went for
06:11
his head, trying to bite it off!
06:13
In a crazy bit of luck, though, the two sharks collided.
06:18
One of them hit Shannon’s surf board and knocked him into the air, while the other came from
06:21
behind while he was being pulled down into the ocean’s depths.
06:25
But here’s the amazing thing.
06:27
The second shark was actually a blessing in disguise, because, when it tried to bite his
06:31
head, it hit Shannon with such a force that he managed to pull out his right hand from
06:36
the jaws of the second shark.
06:38
What happened later was a true miracle.
06:40
Shannon came back to shore; his fingers on the right hand were bleeding severely, but
06:44
he didn’t lose a limb!
06:46
Even more amazing, he still surfs…and says that he’s not afraid of sharks.
06:51
Number 4: Michael Coots.
06:53
For Michael, it was just another surfing day of 1997.
06:57
He was just eighteen years old when Michael came to the ocean with his friend, impatient
07:02
and excited.
07:03
But there was something in the air, he said, something like the smell of a dead fish.
07:07
He didn’t think much about it, and decided to get into the water as soon as possible.
07:12
But, seconds after he entered the ocean, a tiger shark grabbed his right leg, determined
07:17
not to let go.
07:18
Michael fought back, even managing to hit the shark on the head, and eventually the
07:22
fish did let go.
07:23
But it was too late for Michael’s right leg…it was completely severed from the knee down.
07:27
It was surgical precision, Michael later told.
07:31
He reacted quickly and managed to reach a local hospital.
07:34
His life was saved, and after one month, he got a prosthetic leg.
07:38
However, there was no thought of quitting the surf.
07:41
Michael came right back, and, as he later told numerous times, the most difficult part
07:45
was being out of the ocean…he just couldn’t wait to hit the waves once again.
07:49
He is still surfing, and…listen to this…advocating for the rights of sharks.
07:55
What a guy!
07:57
Number 3: Achmat Hassiem.
08:00
Back in 2006, Achmat and his brother were working as lifeguards in Cape Town, and, on
08:05
a particular day, they had a special assignment.
08:08
They were instructing people how to deal with drowning victims, and Achmat’s brother was
08:12
lying in the water, pretending to be drowning.
08:15
However, this soon stopped being just a regular drill.
08:19
What Achmat’s brother didn’t notice, but Achmat did, was that a great white shark was approaching.
08:25
Achmat kept his cool and reacted in a flash.
08:27
He knew that sharks responded to water splashes, because of the impulses thus created.
08:32
He immediately started splashing, in the hope of the great white moving away from his brother.
08:37
It worked.
08:38
However, the shark now found a new target…and it was Achmat.
08:42
The shark grabbed his right leg, but he kept fighting, and turned loose.
08:46
Unfortunately, his right leg was bitten off from the knee down.
08:49
He was immediately rushed to hospital and his life was saved.
08:52
But this was just the beginning of an amazing adventure.
08:56
Achmat Hassiem started competing professionally, in Special Olympics, and he won gold in the
09:01
2012 London Paralympic Games.
09:03
A true survivor!
09:06
Number 2: Nicole Moore.
09:09
It’s absolutely amazing when people can move on with their lives after surviving a shark
09:13
attack.
09:14
Many of them use their experience to enhance the lives of others, and get them into the
09:18
fighting mode.
09:19
Nicole Moore is one of those people.
09:21
In January 2011, Nicole was swimming in the waters near Cancun, when she felt something
09:26
like a pull that came from the water.
09:28
There was no dorsal fin, no silhouette…nothing.
09:31
A few moments later, Nicole saw what had pulled her down…it was a bull shark, and it was
09:36
coming back to get her.
09:37
She tried fighting the beast, but it was very hard to move away, since the shark kept coming
09:41
back at her.
09:42
It bit her left leg and whole left arm, and her blood loss was enormous.
09:47
The operation took eight hours, asthat’s how much time the doctors needed to pump enough
09:52
blood back into Nicole’s body and keep her alive.
09:55
Eventually, she recovered, but decided to use what happened to her to help others.
10:00
Nicole Moore inspires other shark attack victims, working closely with them and sharing her
10:05
own life story.
10:07
Number 1: Bethany Hamilton.
10:09
For our top pick, we’ve chosen a story of courage and determination.
10:14
Bethany Hamilton was a very successful surfer, right from her early age.
10:18
When she turned 13, she was already a promising star of American surfing.
10:22
But then…things took a different turn, jeopardizing her surfing career and even her life.
10:27
While surfing with her friend, Bethany was attacked by a tiger shark.
10:31
The shark approached her surfboard and bit off her left arm up to the shoulder!
10:35
Bethany was in shock, but her friend and friend’s father quickly pulled her out to shore and
10:40
used first aid to prevent further blood loss.
10:43
However, when Bethany reached the hospital, she had already lost around 60% of her blood…Luckily,
10:49
she survived, but what happened later is even more amazing that her survival story.
10:53
Bethany Hamilton refused to remain traumatized by the shark attack…and decided to continue
10:59
surfing!
11:00
Just one month after the attack, Bethany was back, and she is still taking part in major
11:04
surfing competitions.
11:06
At 13, her life changed completely, but she didn’t let that destroy her, and she kept
11:11
fighting back.
11:13
What can we say, but…well, done, Bethany!
11:15
What do you think about these amazing tales of bravery?
