Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be.
—B.K.S. Iyengar
Being aware of challenges and differences is the first step to moving beyond them. It is easy to become cynical and jaded in difficult times of political uproar. In no way would I condone sitting down and not saying a word for fear of criticism. I believe it is imperative now that each of us speaks our mind and takes conscious action in the correct direction to move forward.
In addition to speaking up, it is important to give yourself the gift of self-awareness, however. While you need to stand up for yourself and what you believe to be right— you also need to have compassion for yourself. Taking the time to connect with yourself, and find your inspiration—your inner fire—is just as important as marching and standing up for what you believe. Rather than ignoring the sensational news, it is pertinent to be aware, but also move through the issues—rather than get upset or fearful without deliberate intention to decide on how to promote peace in trying times.
Here are 3 steps to inspire change when dealing with unsteady times:
1. Encourage thought in others
Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he could be, and he will become what he should be.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
It might feel awkward to do something outside of your box of what is “normal” to you. However, times like this are an opportunity to learn how to speak up and also how to show people what you think. It could be as simple as discussing current events with neighbors who you normally would not talk with in a real, down-to-earth way. When there is change in society, it gives you a moment where you can step outside of routine and speak your mind.
Instead of stammering out your ideas or not knowing what to say, you might want to think about your feelings on current issues and write them down—pencil to paper. Get it out—and find out what you believe. Giving it thought on your own—and not only posting on social media—will allow your true self to understand how you feel—and will inspire you to inspire others to talk about events truthfully.
2. Rethink old paradigms
Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it.
―Ralph Waldo Emerson
We are quite clearly living in changing times. The issues that come up in society are pinpoints to understand what is not working anymore. Now is the time to rethink what you have been doing and what needs to change. Ignoring matters or accepting the way it is—without re-evaluation is not going to help create change. Discussing how you can recreate what is not working—or begin in a new way are how matters work for the better.
3. While standing your ground, put your ego in check
He who looks through an open window sees fewer things than he who looks through a closed window.
―Charles Baudelaire
If you desire to discuss current events with others—either in person, through the phone, texting, or social media—first, breathe. Release the anxiety or built-up anger before talking or debating. While it is important to maintain a level of integrity when talking about important matters, also think about your intention. Clear purpose occurs when you have control over your ego. The ego is what makes us believe that we are the right ones. The ego does not want to listen to anyone else, as it believes it knows all.
Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
––Carl Jung
If you are outraged about current events, do something. Take action. Start a blog. Write a song. Write a small book and publish it. Create a monthly meeting with people to come up with new ways to live in this era.
Do what works for you. I like to write and draw, so I am writing and drawing it out. If you like to speak, maybe this is the time for you. Use this time to propel your specialties for greater change that works—that changes things for the better. No worries about being perfect. Trying it is half the battle. Do not just think about it though—do something.
Do not stop trying just because perfection eludes you.
––B.K.S. Iyengar
Anyone can create change for the better. You do not need a degree, a particular job, or more time. You need to make the decision that you want to create change. Little steps lead to greater confidence.
