While jeans are one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe and can be made to fit just about any body type, you must find the perfect pair for your physique. For example, if you’re a pear shape with broad shoulders and narrow hips, stay away from jeans that have no rise or have too much rise. This will accentuate your larger hips and make it appear like you don’t know how to dress!
That’s why it’s important to keep in mind where your curves lie when choosing which style length is best for you. Check out the below guide to learn which style is best for your body type:
Tall & Slim
If you’re a tall and slim man, we recommend trying a slim fit in a medium or dark wash. A slim fit will elongate your leg line, making you appear taller and leaner. You can also try a straight leg jean that has a lower rise to elongate your legs further. Try wearing a shirt that is cut wide at the shoulders and sleeve length (to hide broad shoulders and tapered waist). Bottom line: Stick with minimal detailing like side/back pockets to preserve the clean-cut look of this classic silhouette.
Tall & Bulky (Stocky)
A slim or straight-fit pair of jeans will make you look top-heavy, so make sure you choose a cut and wash that is meant for a larger frame. Our recommendation is to stay away from skinny jeans, and they make shorter men look even shorter. Skinny jeans also work best on leaner men with huge legs; a bulky man in skinny jeans makes his legs look even larger by overwhelming the rest of his silhouette. Go with a regular or relaxed fit pair of streetwear jeans and steer clear of hemming them as it will only add to your length, making you appear even stockier.
Tall & Tall
If you’re a tall man with long legs, we recommend choosing a tapered fit in jeans that are darker in color and have a medium or light wash. A dark wash jean will hide the shape of your leg better, while a lighter wash will make them appear longer. For bottom length, try opting for a 26″ inseam if you have long legs; otherwise, stick to around 28″. To balance out your proportions, wear looser-fitting casual shirts that are cut wide at the shoulders and sleeve length (to hide broad shoulders and tapered waist). Wear skinny or straight-leg pants to elongate your leg line.
Bulky & Bulky (Tall)
If you’re a large man with broad shoulders with a sloping torso, we recommend wearing a relaxed fit in jeans that are lighter in color and have a medium or lighter wash. A relaxed fit pair of jeans will make your legs appear longer and more proportional by hiding your shape. For bottom length, we recommend opting for around 28″ as this will make you look tall and leaner than if you go for 26″. Try pairing the relaxed fit with a shirt that’s cut wide at the shoulder and sleeve length (to hide broad shoulders and tapered waist).
Slim & Slim (BULKY)
If you’re a slim man with broad shoulders and narrow hips, we recommend wearing a tapered fit in jeans that are medium or darker in color with a high or higher rise. A higher rise of jeans will elongate your legs for a slimmer look, while a lower rise will make you appear broader. Wear looser-fitting casual shirts that are cut wide at the shoulders and sleeve length (to hide broad shoulders and tapered waist). Pair looser-fitting pants with thicker fabrics to balance out proportions better.
Slim & Slim (TALL)
If you’re a slim man with long legs, we recommend choosing a tapered fit in jeans that are darker in color and have a high or higher rise. A higher rise of jeans will elongate your legs for a slimmer look, while a lower rise will make you appear broader. For bottom length, we recommend opting for 26″ as this will make you look taller; if it doesn’t work out well with the fit of your jeans, go for 28″. Wear looser-fitting casual shirts that are cut wide at the shoulders and sleeve length (to hide broad shoulders and tapered waist).
What to Avoid:
Skinny Fit: Slim-fitting jeans will make shorter men look even shorter. Also, skinny jeans make your legs appear even longer, so you’ll lose the proportionate look. Stick with a regular fit and stay away from hemming or any skinny details.
Slim Fit: If you’re a tall leaner man, avoid Slim Fit jeans as they will only accentuate your length and make you appear top-heavy. Stick to Regular Fit for a more proportional look.
Regular Fit: While the regular fit is most comfortable for most men, it can create the illusion of being too slim if you have long legs. Opt for Tall Fit instead if you have long legs for a more proportional look.
Straight fit: Regular or relaxed fit jeans will give tall men the right proportions instead of straight leg cuts. Make sure you choose a light wash and darker wash for your jeans to make your legs appear longer.
High-Rise: If you’re a short man who’s trying to elongate his look, try staying away from high-rise jeans as it will only accentuate your length and make you appear top-heavy. Choose regular or low-rise jeans instead. For tall men, high rise is suitable as it makes them appear slimmer by elongating their legs.
