Can you share a bit about your early life and what influenced your path toward a military career?
Growing up in a military family, service was always part of my environment. My father’s career in the Air Force meant that we moved often, which helped me learn to adapt quickly and appreciate different cultures and communities. The sense of duty and camaraderie I observed had a profound influence on my decision to pursue a career in the military. Those early experiences instilled in me a strong work ethic and a commitment to something greater than myself.
What motivated you to choose the Marine Corps specifically, and how did your academic background shape your approach to leadership?
The Marine Corps’ reputation for excellence and its emphasis on leadership and discipline were major draws for me. I wanted to challenge myself in an environment that demanded the best. My academic background in business administration provided a useful foundation for understanding organizational dynamics, effective communication, and strategic thinking. These skills have been invaluable throughout my military career, especially in roles requiring coordination across diverse teams.
Looking back, what were some formative experiences or key challenges during your early career?
One of the most formative experiences was my first assignment as a platoon leader. The responsibility of leading Marines, many of whom had much more experience than I did, was both daunting and motivating. I quickly learned the importance of listening, building trust, and being willing to learn from others. Facing operational challenges in dynamic environments shaped my approach to decision-making and resilience.
How did your upbringing and early leadership roles influence your values and leadership philosophy?
My upbringing taught me the value of integrity, humility, and service. As I assumed greater responsibility, I realized that effective leadership is grounded in respect for others and a willingness to serve those you lead. I strive to create environments where team members feel valued and empowered to contribute their best. My philosophy centers on continuous learning and the belief that strong teams are built on mutual trust and accountability.
What advice would you give to young individuals considering a career in the military or public service today?
I would encourage anyone considering this path to approach it with an open mind and a willingness to embrace challenges. Service can be demanding but deeply rewarding. It’s important to cultivate resilience, stay curious, and seek out mentors who can provide guidance and support. Remember that leadership is about serving others and making a positive impact, regardless of your role.
In your experience, what are the most important qualities for effective leadership in the modern military?
Adaptability, empathy, and clear communication are essential. Leaders must be able to navigate uncertainty, understand the perspectives of those they lead, and articulate a clear vision. The modern military operates in complex, rapidly changing environments, so continuous learning and the ability to foster innovation are also critical. Above all, maintaining ethical standards and caring for people remain at the core of effective leadership.
Building on your extensive experience, what do you consider your most significant achievement or contribution to the military so far?
Throughout my career, I have focused on cultivating inclusive, high-performing teams and mentoring the next generation of leaders. While operational successes are important, I am most proud of helping others grow in their roles and reach their full potential. Contributing to the professional development of Marines and seeing them take on greater responsibility has been deeply rewarding. I believe that empowering others is one of the most lasting impacts any leader can have.
How have your experiences with joint force and international operations shaped your perspective on cooperation and collaboration in today’s security environment?
Serving in joint and multinational environments has reinforced the necessity of collaboration in addressing complex security challenges. Each partner brings unique strengths and perspectives, and effective cooperation enhances our collective ability to achieve shared goals. Building mutual trust and understanding is critical, whether working with other branches of the U.S. military or with international allies. These experiences have shown me that open communication and respect are essential to successful partnerships.
As the military continues to evolve, what areas do you see as most critical for future leaders to focus on?
Future leaders must prioritize adaptability, technological literacy, and cultural competence. The operational landscape is changing rapidly, with new challenges emerging across cyber, information, and space domains. Leaders need to be comfortable with uncertainty and committed to continuous learning. Additionally, understanding diverse cultures and perspectives is vital as we work alongside partners from around the world. Embracing innovation and fostering an environment where new ideas are welcomed will be central to future success.
In your view, how can military organizations best balance tradition and change as they adapt to new realities?
Balancing tradition and change requires honoring the core values and heritage that define the organization while remaining open to new ideas and approaches. It is important to preserve the aspects of military culture that promote discipline, cohesion, and ethical behavior. At the same time, leaders must be willing to challenge outdated practices and encourage experimentation. Successful adaptation comes from finding synergy between respecting the past and embracing the future.
What initiatives or changes do you believe would most benefit service members’ well-being and professional growth in the coming years?
Investing in comprehensive support systems, including mental health resources, career development programs, and family services, is essential. Service members face a range of demands, and ensuring they have access to support enhances both individual and organizational performance. Providing diverse opportunities for education and professional development will also help retain talented individuals and prepare them for future challenges. Emphasizing holistic growth benefits not only the military but the broader society as well.
How do you approach mentorship, and what do you believe are the keys to building effective mentor-mentee relationships?
Mentorship is a two-way street built on trust, respect, and open communication. I strive to be approachable and to listen actively to the needs and aspirations of those I mentor. It is important to recognize each individual’s unique strengths and goals, providing guidance tailored to their circumstances. Effective mentorship also involves challenging mentees to step outside their comfort zones and supporting them as they pursue their ambitions.
Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of military service and its role in society?
I am encouraged by the potential for innovation and positive change in the military. Advances in technology, evolving leadership models, and a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion promise to strengthen our institutions. The military plays a vital role not only in national security but also in demonstrating values such as integrity, service, and resilience. I look forward to seeing how future generations will build on these foundations and contribute to a safer and more just world.
What is your vision for the next chapter of your career and your continued contribution to the field?
My focus remains on developing leaders who are prepared to meet evolving challenges with integrity and vision. I hope to continue contributing through mentorship, strategic guidance, and by fostering environments where innovation and collaboration can thrive. As the nature of service evolves, I aim to support ongoing efforts to strengthen our institutions and ensure that the military remains a force for good in society.
How do you hope your legacy will influence those who come after you in the Marine Corps and the broader military community?
I hope my legacy will inspire others to lead with humility, courage, and a commitment to service. If I have helped instill a sense of responsibility and empowered others to make positive contributions, I will consider that a success. Ultimately, I want those who follow to feel confident in their abilities and dedicated to making a difference, both within the military and beyond.
