For all the money Americans spend on grilling, barbecue remains a surprisingly local affair.
The summer cookout is a major commercial event, generating sales across everything from meat and seasonings to grills, smokers, charcoal, patio furniture and outdoor kitchens. Some of the country’s biggest publicly traded companies – including Traeger, McCormick, Kraft Heinz, Tyson Foods, Hormel, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Costco – all benefit when grilling season gets underway.
Yet new research suggests many consumers would rather keep at least some of their BBQ spending closer to home.
MarketBeat, a financial media company, surveyed 3,009 consumers to identify the independent BBQ stores Americans rate most highly, while also exploring attitudes toward the increasing commercialization of barbecue culture.
