Tradition is meant to change, but I don’t think anyone could have predicted the way tradition would change the modern family.
The modern family is something entirely different than what our grandparents grew up with. In the 1950s the man of the house would work long hours and put food on the table. The mother would stay at home and take care of the children and household chores. This idea of the family was recently parodied in an awesome commercial.
I remember seeing pictures of my great grandparents in their home. Anytime they took a picture in their house it seemed as if my great grandfather was sitting down smoking his pipe and my great grandmother was standing up next to him, usually with a dish towel in her hand.
Those days are over. There may be a small number of families in the world that still live their lives this way, and it’s perfectly fine if they do, but for the majority of Americans, the definition of how a family should be has become much looser over the last couple of decades.
