You know it is natural for couples to grow apart. In your mind, you want to develop yourself beyond the relationship. But when you come back home to your partner, the vibe feels different.
Ignoring the emotional gap feels better than having “the talk” on any night. If the other person felt the same, they can also mention the shift.
Why not stay in the relationship unhappy?
Why bother disturbing the connection you had going with complicated talks? The unfortunate thing is that the gap widens in silence. You feel guilty about your actions. Sometimes you haven’t even done anything wrong yet.
So, let’s review the signs of partners growing apart in relationships.
…
1. Relationship stuff pales
If silence feels awkward, the energy in your relationship is different. You always want to scroll your phone. Or have the television playing when your partner is around.
It’s because you are struggling to connect with them. Your partner’s jokes don’t hit anymore. They leave you salty or unmoved.
You prefer to communicate with the new people in your life. The connection with them feels easy and unforced.
The deal with relationships is that you pull the other person to your level. You introduce them to your way of living with the hope they accept you. This practice doesn’t end after you first get to know each other.
It’s okay to do individual activities if you make time for doing a few together. You will feel less weird about your new hobbies or career choice when you can talk to your person about them.
You will grow. Share your different self with your love interest.

2. Trying to fill empty voids
Have you ever eaten your feelings? Or shopping might be your secret guilty pleasure? When our emotional needs don’t get met, we sometimes reach for instant gratification.
These feelings will pale when you get the emotional support you need. Stability creates emotional balance. It may not be easy to find common interests but try caring about your partner’s passion.
- Some days, all you can do is listen.
- Other days, you may start asking questions.
- Sometimes, you will only want to talk about your passions.
On either of these days, open dialogue is worth it.

3. You don’t do this simple activity well
People in relationships give each other peace when the union is going well. They can fall asleep easily with their partner beside them. That all changes, though.
They might fight. Or the couple might feel out of sync because one person changed. In both scenarios, their sleep becomes disturbed. You start to feel uneasy about your role in the person’s life.
You might pretend to sleep to avoid pillow talks. But you are struggling to get some sleep. It’s healthy to talk with your partner. Have an uncomfortable discussion and feel like you are on the same page again.
…
4. Talking doesn’t work
If you talk yet your feelings don’t change, you may need a break from your partner. You think you don’t belong anymore. And they don’t get you. In this situation, you can become depressed. Or cheat when someone understands you.
Process your needs. Are you holding resentment towards your mate? Do you require time to find yourself outside their shadow? You can always come back to each other. But mistakes, while drifting apart, are hard to recover from as a unit.
You don’t have to end your relationship. You can ask your partner for space to process your thoughts.
Ask them for time and to trust you.
