How do I know that I am loved?
This is a common question in sessions. When you must wonder whether you are genuinely loved by your partner, it can lead to you questioning the relationship.
We as social beings in a relationship want to know that we are loved.
As our needs are different so is our love language — the way in which we need love expressed.
While no relationship is the same, being able to have some common guides are indicative of whether you can continue to have a fulfilling relationship. The very need to question the love in a relationship is indicative that you and your partner need to understand the love languages of each other.
…
These are some signs though that indicates your partner genuinely loves you.
Take time to understand you — We are all guilty of entering a relationship with our perceptions and often view the relationship through our eyes only.
It takes maturity to look beyond your needs and understand your partner and what their needs are. To do so will require time to understand them. Asking your partner for a list of things that they enjoy isn’t sufficient.
There is the need to listen to what is said and more so what is not said. This is the only way to understand them.
Love and accept you as you are — I remember once dating someone who said when I do this, or I do that they would then love me.
The relationship never evolved into a committed one.
No one wants to be in a relationship with someone who is waiting for you to “fix things” before they love you.
It is either they love you or they don’t.
If someone says that you must change or do something differently to be loved, then for your well-being walk away.
Seeking your interest — Someone who loves you will always seek your well-being. I remember once being interested in pursuing a photography course and my then partner was able to get all the details and send the information to me.
I was surprised and happy, it had only been once I had casually mentioned it in a conversation and nothing thereafter. So, to remember meant they were interested in me pursuing my interest and goals.
Of course, this must go both ways.
…
Support you even if flying to the moon — Quite often it is those closest to us who tell us we can’t or shouldn’t.
You wouldn’t see your partner walking into harm and let them do so.
However, once it is something they are enthusiastic about even if they may not have the skills, knowledge nor experience, believing and encouraging can go a long way.
Communicate through disagreement — Conflict will happen in all relationships.
Trying to avoid conflict makes for an unhealthy relationship.
When you have a difference of opinion. It may be necessary to take time to think through before speaking.
However, it is imperative to take time and communicate about the issue. It allows for understanding each other and allows for one to build a more closely knit relationship.
Uninterrupted time with you — You get it, we live in a fast-paced world and the demands of life can bear down upon one where there isn’t much time for self, nor others.
A willingness to set aside time for your partner if even one hour, occasionally is indicative of one invested in a relationship.
Value your opinion — When you offer your thoughts on a matter they listen thoughtfully, and while your partner like yourself has the right to choose whatever they believe is best for them. They don’t shut you down when you offer an opinion. Further, in many instances they may seek out your thoughts on the best course of action.
…
As social beings we all desire love and want to know that we are loved. Everyone may express love in many unique ways, yet there are common areas such as communication, thoughtfulness, support and encouragement that are key to a healthy relationship.
While no two relationships are the same, it is important to express your needs and also aim to meet the needs of your partner where you can.
