It’s already lunchtime on the last day of the winter holidays, and I’m still in my pyjamas. The house is quiet except for the occasional ping of my anxiety reminding me that reality crashes back like a tidal wave tomorrow. The holiday cocoon we’ve built — filled with lazy mornings, endless reading and shameless telly binges — is about to burst, and I’m not sure I’m ready. I am quite sure I am not prepared in any shape or form.
Remember two weeks ago? The winter holidays stretched before us like an endless horizon of possibilities. We had such grand plans for family time, Christmas celebrations, New Year festivities and lots and lots of decluttering and sorting. Now, those days feel like they’ve slipped through my fingers faster than my children’s matching socks seem to disappear in the washing. And we didn’t declutter anything but added stuff with Christmas presents.
And now I am realising that somewhere in this house, school supplies have staged a rebellion. Rucksacks, notebooks and favourite jumpers have scattered themselves to the four winds during our holiday hibernation. My daughter’s favourite (and only) jeans need washing, and I’m pretty sure my son’s holiday reading homework is playing hide-and-seek under the sofa. We don’t have uniforms, so getting clothing right at 6.30 am is vital tomorrow morning.
Disastrous Sleep Schedules
The real challenge will be getting everyone’s sleep schedule back on track. We’ve been living in a magical dimension where bedtime becomes a suggestion rather than a rule and alarm clocks don’t exist (my heaven actually). Now I need to convince two kids who’ve been staying up watching “just one more episode” that 8 pm is the new 10 pm. Tomorrow’s hideously early alarm is going to feel like cruel and unusual punishment for all of us. And I have to make snacks for them, oh God.
And because the universe has a sense of humour, tomorrow night I’m chaperoning my daughter’s class trip to the opera. After surviving the first day back to reality, I’ll be attempting to appreciate some Mozart whilst suppressing yawns and trying not to think about Thursday’s looming German grammar test that my daughter missed before the holidays. The test notes are currently MIA, along with her entire memory of German grammar, apparently.
But here’s the plot twist: I’m surprisingly calm about all of this.
Maybe it’s personal growth, or maybe it’s the post-holiday zen still lingering in my system, but I’m not freaking out like I would have in the past. Our house isn’t that big — things will turn up. The children are old enough to help hunt down their own stuff. Thanks to my time off work, the laundry situation is actually under control. I’ve even managed to find a dress for the opera that mostly fits (another win!).
Small Changes, Big Results
Over the past few months, I’ve been slowly decluttering our lives. Excess and random notebooks? Gone. Unnecessary stuff? Donated. Even small improvements have made a huge difference. My bedroom-slash-home-office actually looks like a place where a functional adult might work. The children have their own creative space at the little bureau downstairs, which has become our family’s hub for everything from homework to art projects — and my writing.
So yes, today I need to orchestrate the great back-to-school preparation: showers, outfit planning, supply hunting, and mental preparation. But breaking it down into small tasks makes it feel less like scaling Mount Everest and more like just hiking a very steep hill.
To all you parents out there facing your own back-to-school chaos this week: we’ve got this. Maybe not gracefully, maybe not perfectly, but we’ll get there. And hey, if you see me walking to school tomorrow morning, steaming cup of tea in hand, trying to remember if I packed my work laptop — know that you’re not alone in this beautiful mess we call parenting.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find my building access pass. I’m sure it’s around here somewhere…
