Have you ever argued with someone who thinks being louder means they’re right?
I have, several times, and I can tell you this for free.
It wears you out.
It’s unbearable.
And somehow, this never seems to change.
Over 2,000 years ago, Socrates dealt with the same types of people we meet now.
There’s a story where Socrates was attacked, not with violence, but with words and ideas.
A man confronted him in a rude, aggressive manner, using weak arguments and poor manners.
When people can’t explain their ideas well, they often resort to force, such as raising their voices, using insults, or trying to intimidate.
Sound familiar? I completely understand!
So how did Socrates respond?
No retaliation.
No attempt to “win.”
One of his students, puzzled by how calm he was, asked why he didn’t say anything back.
Socrates replied:
“If a donkey kicked me, would I sue it?”
Socrates wasn’t acting superior.
He was showing good judgment.
His response gives us an important lesson:
An intelligent person does not lower themselves to the level of someone who refuses to think.
Not every provocation deserves a reply.
Not every argument deserves your energy.
Sometimes, staying quiet isn’t a sign of weakness. It shows wisdom.
Elegance Is Not What You Think, Always
The word elegance actually comes from the Latin electus, meaning “light” or “chosen.”
Elegance is not:
- Designer clothes
- Expensive possessions
- Loud displays of status
True elegance is:
- Knowing when to speak
- Knowing when to stop
- Knowing when being silent says more than words ever could
A truly elegant mind stays light. It doesn’t hold onto extra noise or focus on it.
Be Like Socrates
In a world where outrage and loudness get attention, choosing to stay calm is a bold choice.
Choosing silence is powerful.
Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is not get involved.
So next time someone tries to pull you into a pointless argument,
Pause.
Smile.
And remember Socrates.
Sometimes, the best and most elegant response is to say nothing at all.
Be like Socrates.
