In fact, a fair number of teams are trotting out unproven or over-the-hill options and hoping for the best. Unsurprisingly, there aren’t too many Super Bowl contenders from that list. Perhaps the only exception is Kansas City. The Chiefs are turning to second-year play-caller Patrick Mahomes, a first-round pick with a rocket arm who spent last season learning behind Alex Smith. The Chiefs are full of offensive weapons and finished 10-6 in 2017-18, but Social is skeptical of Mahomes and his impact, giving him a 54 percent positive score over the past 14 days. For what it’s worth, that’s better than new Buffalo Bill A.J. McCarron, who’s probably the frontrunner for an unappetizing starting gig. He has a 52 percent positive score over the same time span, just ahead of often-injured Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill (48 percent positive) and the eternally bland Baltimore Raven Joe Flacco (46 percent positive). All four of those quarterbacks are far behind Josh McCown, the 39-year-old battling for the New York Jets top job who parlayed a solid 2017 season into a $10 million deal and a 67 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
