In my city of the future, there is accepted and inclusive genderfluidity. All people are who they are, love the person they love, and look how they look without shame or shaming.
If I had to give a reason for why that is not true today, it would be “confusion.” Our views on sexuality, feelings, and mind-body connections are repressed by religion and social convention and experience. The need to readily identify the person you are interacting with as male or female and their sexual preference to establish personal comfort is putting self before the many.
In my city, people have acknowledged feelings, openness, and acceptance. Connections with other people on an intellectual, emotional, and/or sexual level are sought and accepted. Without reservations and in the absence of “isms,” there is a surge of person to person relationships in real time and far less dependence on electronic media.
All restrooms have stalls and are people friendly. Shoe stores ask every customer what color and size heel they’re looking for. Men’s shoes come in narrow sizes. Women’s shoes come in double wide and up to size fifteen. Women’s clothing accommodates robust figures and men’s clothing comes in petite.
The hardest thing we’ve had to address is a genderless pronoun to replace “he” and “she,” and “his” and “hers.” Currently, we’ve settled on “Ee” and “Ees.” It is working for now. There are several lexicographers working on alternatives as they insist it must be a proper word. Our society is not holding its collective breath.
While genderfluidity has empowered most of the community, it has caused some problems.
The marketing world is in a frenzy. After struggling for years to reach a fair inclusion of people of color, genderfluidity has caused another need for revolution and representation. Progress is evident, though the problem of defining family units, and the persons included in same, is still in flux.
The media community is also adjusting. The metrics affecting leads in movies and presenters in the news and reality show are all over the map. While there is no wrong choice, there is no unanimous choice — as yet. It matters to no one I know.
To wander through my city is to experience life and self-expression. Fear and crime is negligible. Kindness abounds. By embracing everyone’s true self without judgment, people thrive, share, and grow into the amazing humans they were meant to be — with respect and dignity.
