How to Replace a Thermostat (Step-by-Step Guide)
Hey kids. Today I’m going to walk you through the steps to replace a thermostat. Yours might be different than mine, but I’ll show you how I replaced mine.
The existing one actually worked fine, but sadly the manufacturer decided to stop supporting app control. That was one of our favorite features—being able to control the temperature from anywhere.
For example, if you’re away and wonder, “Did we turn off the heater?” you could just check the app. Or if you want to warm up the house before getting home, you could turn it on remotely.
The manufacturer wanted us to buy a new model for nearly $200, so instead we found one for just over $100 with great reviews and decided to try it.
We were quoted about $800 for a new thermostat with installation. By doing this yourself, you can save at least $500.
A Quick Dad Joke
Before we get started: What do you call an alligator wearing a vest?
An investigator.
Alright, let’s get started.
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
This is our current thermostat that we’re replacing.
First, turn off the power to your furnace. There may be a switch on the unit, or you might need to turn it off at the breaker panel.
Even after turning off power, the thermostat may still appear on due to backup batteries—so go ahead and remove it.
Step 2: Document the Wiring
Take a picture of the current wiring for reference.
If needed, use a screwdriver to press the tabs and release the wires. Remove all wires carefully.
Step 3: Remove the Old Thermostat
Unscrew the thermostat from the wall and remove the faceplate and wall covering.
You may notice some exposed paint—this might require touch-up later if the new plate doesn’t fully cover it.
Step 4: Mount the New Thermostat
Feed the wires through the new mounting plate.
In this case, the existing holes lined up perfectly, but you may need to install anchors depending on your wall.
Secure the mounting plate with screws.
Step 5: Reconnect the Wires
It helps to have a wiring cheat sheet or follow the labels on your new thermostat.
Position each wire near its terminal before connecting.
Insert each wire until it snaps into place. You may need a screwdriver to help seat it properly.
After connecting each wire, tuck it back into the wall to keep things neat and ensure the cover will fit.
Step 6: Attach the Cover
Once all wires are connected and tucked away, snap the thermostat cover into place.
The back cavity is small, so keeping wires neatly tucked is important.
Step 7: Turn Power Back On
Restore power to the system.
The thermostat will guide you through setup prompts, including:
- Selecting language
- Choosing home settings
- System type (heating/cooling)
- Fuel type (gas, oil, etc.)
- Efficiency level
- Number of heating and cooling stages
Follow the on-screen instructions and save your settings.
Step 8: Connect to Wi-Fi
Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter your password.
Then set the date and time.
You may also be able to customize the display, such as changing the screen color.
Step 9: Connect to the App
Use the QR code (usually included in the box) to download the app.
Create an account with your email and password, then connect your thermostat.
Once connected, you can:
- Adjust temperature remotely
- Create schedules
- Control your system from anywhere
Final Thoughts
I hope this was helpful. Your setup may be slightly different, but if you take your time, follow the wiring carefully, and ensure the power is off, you should be fine.
Always be cautious when working with electricity, but this is a very doable DIY project with plenty of resources available.
Thanks for watching, and God bless you.
