Hollywood loves to tell us that a man’s first love is the one he’ll never truly get over. That she’ll always have a special place in his heart, no matter who comes after.
But is that actually true?
So I did.
I asked as many men as I could, read through countless online discussions, and noticed something interesting.
Almost every man remembered his first love.
But remembering someone and still loving them are two completely different things.
That was the biggest misconception.
When I asked if they still had feelings for their first love, the majority said no.
In fact, many of them said their second or even third relationship was the one that changed them the most. Others admitted that the ex who occasionally appeared in their dreams wasn’t even their first love.
It made me realize something.
We often confuse memory with love.
Just because someone crosses your mind doesn’t necessarily mean you want them back.
Some men admitted they sometimes looked back on the good moments and wondered what would’ve happened if they had made different choices.
But memory has a funny way of working — we tend to romanticise the good memories while slowly forgetting the arguments, the things we disliked about them, and all the little reasons the relationship ended.
And interestingly, the men who actually did get back together with their first love often said the experience reminded them exactly why they had broken up in the first place.
Then there was one answer I couldn’t stop thinking about.
It didn’t come from men talking about their first love.
It came from divorced men.
I expected answers like:
“Because we have kids together.”
“Because we built a life together.”
“Because of everything we owned.”
Instead, one response kept appearing in different forms.
“Mostly… she took away the way I love.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Not because it was about a first love.
But because it was about the relationship that changed them the most.
Maybe that’s the real question we should be asking.
Not: “Do men forget their first love?”
But: “Which relationship leaves the deepest mark?”
Because they aren’t always the same person.
Some men remember their first love fondly.
Some barely think about her anymore.
Some remember another relationship much more vividly.
And many have moved on, built happy lives, and fallen deeply in love again.
Hollywood loves the idea that every man secretly spends his life chasing his first love.
Real life is much more complicated than that.
Sometimes the relationship you remember isn’t the one you miss.
Sometimes it’s simply the one that changed you.
