When it comes to first dates, I’m a cheap mofo, and I have no qualms admitting it.
But just because I prefer my first dates cheap doesn’t mean I’m a cheapskate.
I have no issues with splurging; I just have a problem with splurging on people I don’t know well enough.
I believe any date offer I make should be selfless and not transactional.
The good thing about my pragmatic approach to dating is that I have never found myself in a buyer’s remorse situation like TikToker @hollowmannn0 — an unabashed simp with more money than sense, who treated a first date like a transaction and blew $1000 on a drinking extravaganza, only to get mad when he realized he wasn’t getting laid.
If sex is all you want, seek out a professional
Seriously, if getting your dick wet is all you want, Hollowmannn0, why not take that money and pay a professional? It’s not only cheaper but there is a good chance you will get what you want without slogging through the minutiae of modern dating. That $1000 is more than enough to catch a flight to Nevada, book an escort, and still have enough left over.
Not that I encourage anyone to use an escort. All I’m doing here is painting a picture of how ridiculous it is to spend that much money on someone you barely know, sex or no sex.
There is a teachable moment for men in this
There are seven critical mistakes hollowmannn0 made, and it would behoove men to take note lest they find themselves in a similar predicament. I’m going to list them in the order of appearance. Hopefully, we can all learn what not to do when courting women and arranging and conducting the first date.
1) He harassed her from the get-go
While there’s nothing wrong with sliding into a girl’s DMs on Instagram, there’s definitely a fine line between persistence and harassment. Persistence is sending a message or two and only pursuing her if she responds. Harassment is wearing her down until she responds and agrees to go out with you.
2) Paying 275 bucks for her hair
Nothing is wrong with spending money on someone you like, but at least vet them first. Don’t just splurge because you think they look hot. That’s the fastest way to get used.
3) Not being clear about his intention
There was nothing in the way of discussing what he was looking for pre-date. He just assumed the person he was to meet would be looking for the same thing, which is a mistake. Whether casual or serious, a meeting of the minds is necessary to avoid confusion later on.
4) Setting the date at the club
Now I don’t know if the venue was a nightclub. But based on the heavy drinking involved and the party atmosphere, I’m going to assume it was, though it could very well have been a bar or lounge.
Generally, I would say neither of these places makes for a good date venue, as they involve a lot of distractions: alcohol, loud music, lots of people. Ideally, a date venue should allow for a more relaxed environment, one that is conducive to getting to know each other through conversation.
5) She was late for the date
Not only was she late, but before their meetup, she asked for more money to pay for a late fee she accrued. Both are indicative of an irresponsible and tardy person. These are all red flags worthy of attention. A woman who doesn’t respect your time does not respect you, period.
6) She was on her phone when they interacted one-on-one
Come on, do I even need to spell out why this is a major no-no? I know we live in a digital age where everyone is glued to their phones, but if your date cannot even put down her phone to engage with you, then what exactly is the point of you even being there? Clearly, your presence is not needed.
If I were hollowmannn0, I would have ended the date there and then. Pervasive phone use on a date is an aggravating pet peeve of mine. It shows a lack of respect and bad manners. If this is not the clearest sign of disinterest, I don’t know what is.
7) He kept trying to pump her full of alcohol
Wake up. It’s not consensual if one or more of you are drunk. Many a man has found himself in jail because the girl he got drunk and slept with the night before had a come-to-Jesus moment once sober. And it won’t make a lick of difference you spent close to a week’s worth of wages doing so.
It’s not worth it, fellas. And it’s not even a sign of a good human.
In closing
One thing I will say is kudos to the girl for not falling for this guy’s tricks, including guilt-tripping her into coming back home with him. The only thing she did wrong was being tardy. Everything else is on him.
Maybe hollowmannn0 will read this article and make some changes to his dating life, or maybe not. Judging by the terrible conclusion he came to after the date:
This is why I don’t take females out like that.
The latter is more likely to happen.
But for the rest of us, hollowmannn0 mistakes are our gain. The seven tips I listed above are solid reminders of what to avoid. Any guy looking to improve his dating chances would do well to take them seriously.
