and I will always be your mother and the

voice of my mother Stephanie Michelle
waters golden head up shoulders strong
like Paul bear at your brother’s funeral
strong like you forgot to die today
strong like grandmother skeleton key
strong like you my hip and my neck
strong don’t forget that you my boy when
everyone else is watching you can’t
scrub the Sun out of my child you
already live 20 years without a halo
you must absorb all the boy you can
until they turn you into a prayer how
are you going to try and kill my child
you remember that suicide is never the
answer
why I brought you in this world now wish
a bitch would try and kill what it’s
mine even if it issues don’t forget my
fist
it’s stronger than any bullets that
peroxide cannot clean a body and a
prayer my hands have never stopped a
pinky for you didn’t I say keep your
head up boy and your mind is stuck in
the cotton clouds how are you going to
hear the bell for your good name I still
talk to God about you still hold your
baby picture on my chest and night don’t
stop holding my picture close either
both hands a shackle behind the back I
gave you I understand you think you’re
grown woman now but I didn’t raise you
talk back your elders like that you
still mine
you still my child oh boy don’t put your
head down God got you you got help
girl hits my shoulder child I got you
forever girl I love you and there is no
condition in this world that can stop
your mama
