On Super Bowl Sunday, amongst the many, special event created commercials, Disney debuted an ad featuring a new star to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Awkwafina, also known as Nora Lum
Lum has already been called on the carpet regarding her “Blaccent” or use of AAVE (African American Vernacular English). This specifically cultural way of speaking was handily dropped upon receiving larger Hollywood roles. Lum explained herself on a Twitter post:
There is a sociopolitical context to everything, especially the historical context of the African American community in this country. As a non-black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backward toward the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group.

Her explanation for the use of a “blaccent” and AAVE earlier in her career sounds like her PR team consulted with an Ethnic Studies professor. Girl, you know what you did, why you did it, and why you dropped that persona as soon as you found commercial success 🙄. Still, I wish her mental health and peace. I’ve never boycotted her, just rolled my eyes and probably will continue to. Loved her in Shang Chi.
Cultural appropriation. It’s not just for Halloween, anymore.
* What is cultural appropriation?
* Is there a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation?
* Why isn’t this OK? It’s all in fun, right?
