Dad, how do I?

Hey kids! Today, as a shoutout to my wife’s Filipino heritage, I’m going to show you how to make a traditional Filipino summertime treat. It’s called halo-halo. But first, I have a dad joke for you: What do you call a marshmallow with a hole in it? A hollow-mallow! Ah, so anyway, let’s get started.
Alright, so the basic ingredients you’ll need are really easy to find. You’ll need some fruit mixture in syrup, or halo-halo— it even says it right on the can. Here’s a smaller version of it, from a different brand, with halo-halo ingredients. You can find this in any Asian store. You’ll also need some milk. You can use whole milk or non-fat milk— whatever you prefer. Traditionally in the Philippines, they use sweetened condensed milk, which makes it super sweet, but we’re not going to do that. I’m going to use almond milk instead.
Traditionally, halo-halo is made with shaved ice. If you don’t have a shaved ice machine, you can use crushed ice and just pick out the larger pieces. Shaved ice is really the way to go, so if you have a shaved ice machine— which we do, because we love our halo-halo— you’ll need some ice for that.
If you’re feeling really fancy, you can add some Ube ice cream, which you can get at any Asian store, if it’s available.
Alright, so what we do is take the fruit mixture and dump it into a different jar because it’s not pre-mixed. If you don’t mix it first and dump it straight into your mixture, all the red beans will end up at the bottom, and it will be hard to mix them in properly. So, it’s good to go ahead and premix it.
Now, I’ll walk you through adding the ingredients. First, we’ll shave the ice with our ice shaver.

First, we’ll add our halo-halo mixture. Typically, this includes red mung beans, white beans, coconut gel, and coconut strings, all in heavy syrup. There may be other ingredients depending on the brand, but that’s basically what’s in this.
Next, add your shaved ice. Pack it in pretty heavy; I don’t show that here, but normally you’d pack it down once it’s in.
Then, add whatever milk you like— as much or as little as you want. I might have added a bit too much here, but it’s up to you. You can also add your Ube ice cream. This is really nice, and you can even top it off with whipped cream. It’s really up to you to make it your own.
I hope you enjoy this nice little treat. It’s something we always look forward to every summer, which is why we invested in the ice shaver. You can customize it as you like; I’ve seen people add all kinds of different things, like corn. If you search online, you’ll find all sorts of variations. But this is a really easy and basic way to get you started.
I hope that was helpful to you. Thanks for watching, and God bless!
