“The Heart of Sports” is a weekly column that curates the stories, pictures and moments that provide a window into the beating heart of sports:
- The father-son bonds forged in sport.
- The tender moments among teammates.
- The thrilling moments from your childhood that you never forget.
It’s why we watch. It’s why we play. It’s the stuff that rises up out of sports and settles down into us.

This week, we head up to Toronto, a once-proud baseball franchise that is in the beginning stages of an exciting rebuild. As the baseball circle of life eases ever forward, cornerstone sluggers like Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson, and Edwin Encarnacion have moved on.
After a few difficult years, reinforcements are finally here. Led by uber-prospect Vladimir “Son of Vlad” Guerrero, Jr., and buoyed by a group of prospects with major league bloodlines, including Cavon Biggio (son of Hall of Famer, Craig Biggio), Lourdes Guerriel, Jr. (brother of the Astros, Yuli Guerriel), and – soon to arrive – Griffin Conine (son of 15-year veteran professional hitter Jeff Conine) and Bo Bichette (son of slugger Dante Bichette).
Guerrero, Jr. and Biggio are the first ever sons of Hall of Famers to play together in the majors.

And boy do they like playing together. These kids love and support the heck out of each other. THIS is what a celebration is supposed to look like:
Frankly, we all deserve the level of support Vladito & Lourdes Gurriel Jr. give Cavan Biggio. pic.twitter.com/4aF2SMiwvl

May each and every one of us have friends and teammates who celebrate us with this kind of unbridled love!
