Although the eco-friendly movement in the United States may have started off slowly, it is quickly becoming a more mainstream ideal. In fact, for many business owners, the idea of going green is one that might literally put more green into their pockets further down the road.
Aside from the helping reduce the serious concerns associated with the environment and climate change, there are a number of economic reasons to green up your business. Men that own or are considering starting a business will benefit from incorporating sustainable ideas into their business models.
Customers are Interested
As the green movement has caught on, a far greater number of consumers are becoming aware of the environmental and social impact that their purchases have. We are beginning to understand that bottled water purchases damage aquifers and contribute to the economies of corrupt oil producing countries. Or that our cheap clothing contributes to deforestation and hazardous work environments in southeast Asia.
This knowledge makes consumers want to change. Nearly 66 percent are willing to pay more for brands that are producing materials in a more sustainable manner. Companies that have committed to sustainable ideas have seen nearly four times the growth in recent years as companies that have not.
Companies are Cutting Costs
Companies that are adapting to new consumer desires and governmental regulations are also finding numerous ways to save money by becoming more sustainable. For instance, a reduction of dependence upon oil and gas because of renewable energy production or other reduction-minded changes has made company bottom lines less susceptible to large swings in oil prices. This can mean a more consistent income.
Additionally, a variety of new business opportunities are cropping up with sustainably and improving the human condition in mind. For instance, the Global Soap Project is an impressive organization that works with hotel chains to collect nearly 2.6 million bars of soap that are thrown away when guests check out. These soap bars are often sent to third world countries or delivered to shelters and needy families around the US. In 72 percent of company CEOs said sustainable initiatives such as these are one of their top 10 priorities.
Governments are Investing
Maybe most importantly for men considering starting their own business is that the government is willing to make investments in certain companies with sustainably oriented goals. The Obama Administration has developed a number of initiatives targeted at supporting companies that are pursuing renewable energies. Furthermore, tax rebates for more efficient products are widely available for homeowners (who have to pay somebody for installation).
In additional to all of this, investors are beginning to favor renewable energies over fossil fuels more frequently. This bodes well for contractors and companies that are producing and maintaining a new, green infrastructure. It also should be a sign of encouragement of those that are considering jumping in.
There are more than a few reasons to take your company in a more sustainable direction. After initial investments, many companies are seeing an increase in customer support and a decrease in overall costs. Add in potential governmental support and substantial environmental benefits and it doesn’t seem like there is much of a reason not to take the plunge!
