There are times in life that make you step back and take stock of things. New years, birthdays, and major life changes can, even temporarily, snap us out of our complacency. When that happens, take advantage of the opportunity to really look at yourself. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Still, the body can be a good reflection of the state of the mind. Therefore, here’s a good, fundamental question to ask:
When you wake up in the morning, are you happy with the face staring back at you in the bathroom mirror?
If the answer is no, then perhaps it’s time to make some changes. Life is quite simply far too short to hate the person in the mirror. But I’m not going to tell you right now that you need to align chakras, or find your totem animal. Not that there’s anything wrong with doing those things. Nope, there’s some non-New Age remedies you can implement today to change the face in the mirror.
Stop Underestimating Sleep
I know you’re doing it. You’re ignoring all the advice and proven science screaming at you to get consistently good sleep. Stop being so damn stubborn, and go to sleep already!
You’re a human being, start sleeping like one. That means seven to eight hours of uninterrupted rest, as often as possible.
Stop telling me this is obvious. If it’s so obvious, why aren’t you doing it every night. How old is your mattress? Maybe it’s time for an upgrade, eh? Or are you in love with the you-shaped depression in your current bed?
Lack of sleep contributes to all that stress and irritability your friends and family are complaining about, you know. It will also help limit those pesky wrinkles and other signs of aging you keep complaining about, too.
Be aware that your diet can have an effect on your sleeping pattern. If your diet is filled with sugary snacks you may find it more difficult to get a full night of rest.
Cold Showers are Your Friend
If you’re brave enough, I challenge you to take a cold shower in the morning. Or at least, blast yourself with a few moments of cold water during your regularly scheduled shower.
It’s a good idea for two reasons. First it will open up your pores, so when you wash you can get rid of all the dirt, muck, and grease. Second, it will revitalize your body, waking you up and making you look more attentive.
Need more reasons? How about a better immune system, accelerated muscle repair, stress relief, and stimulated weight loss?
Have I got your attention now? Or do you need a cold shower?
You might think that the scruffy, unkempt look will work just the same for you as it does, say, Johnny Depp.
You’re not Johnny Depp. I’m not sure you would want to be, but that’s a different article.
Wait, you’re not a hipster, are you?
Anyway (and this is especially for the male reader), the message is: shave. This goes double for you hirsute fellows who think your existing facial hair is an excuse to have stubble growing at the margins of your beard.
Nope. Everyone can still see the stubble.
Oh, and just like my earlier suggestion of reevaluating your mattress, you might want to think about changing the type of razor you use.

Make Sure You Measure Up
Last but not least, I’m going to repeat myself…again…in case you missed it: you need to make sure your clothes are measured correctly.
If you want to look and feel great, make sure your clothes don’t hang off your frame or fit too snugly.
Wait, what’s that? You’re using that “obvious” word again. Sure, I’m stating the obvious. Whatever makes you feel better…
Okay, this last point is definitely less important than sleep and showering. But when you put all this advice together, you can call me Captain Obvious all you want!
