We’ve all seen him.
The guy at the bar sweating under the air conditioning vent hoping for the cool brisk manufactured air to breathe new life into his waning soul. His face is bright red, as beads of sweat stream down his forehead. The tries to cool himself with a cold beer, but nothing is helping..
His plight is a real one. Some of you may have even been there before, as have I. But I’m here to tell you that this sticky fate can be avoided with these helpful hints for summertime style:
Clean Up Top = Party All Around
I personally like to keep my hair short during the summer. It not only looks good, it’s also practical. There’s nothing worse than being at the beach and having to continually shift your head and hair at the whim of the coastal wind that should be cooling you, not making you contort like a member of cirque de soleil.
Jump in the water for some swimming or surfing. With short hair, you have 180° of clear vision to protect you from dangerous marine life, “kooks” who don’t know how to surf, or the back set that’s about to take you to surfing nirvana.
Freshly Shaven Face = Cool Breeze Magnet
While it may not be a scientific fact, I’ve always felt that a freshly shaven faces heighten the senses on your face. I want you to remember the last time you grew out a beard, or “forgot” to shave for a couple of days. Now remember what it felt like after you shaved. The wind blew a little cooler across your face, the touch of another person against your cheek felt a little more sensual.
When it gets really hot, the last thing you want is more hair to incubate your body heat. Shave it off clean and smooth with your BIC Flex5, and let the cooling process begin.
Sunscreen = Saved Life
There used to be a time when you could get away with not applying sunscreen and the worst that would happen is your face got dry. Now, as the ozone continues to wear away and UV rays find their way to us in stronger and stronger doses, the need for sunscreen is paramount. You don’t need to cake it on unless you’re going to be in the sun for a while, but a subtle layer can be the difference between a freckle on your back and raised mole that could provide some harsh realities.
If you’ve ever been burned by the sun, the heat that generates off your body could probably warm a small village. Keep your body temperature down and protect your skin.
Not only that, sun damage can provide a myriad of problems: The dreaded sunburn that can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare, premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, sun spots, or of course, skin cancer. You’ve just shaved that face, now you need to protect it.
Dress Smart = Dressed Cool
Keep your style simple, light and loose. It’s the summer time, so you want to look cool, feel cool and dress cool.
One Word: Cotton.
If you don’t want to be the guy with the sweat stain on your back that looks like a Rorschach Test, keep these three clothing rules in mind: Simple, Light and Loose.
Lightweight cotton button-up shirts with long sleeves are a live saver in the summer. Roll up the sleeves to your elbows to stay cool while also classy. With the roll-up look you’re saying, “Hey, just because it’s summer doesn’t mean I have to dress like a Neanderthal.”
Keep it loose and casual, and the light cotton will hide the sweat. Then when the sun goes down, you just roll those sleeves down and it’s like you’ve been doing this all your life.
Finish the ensemble with some cotton chinos (pants or shorts) and you’re ready to go.
(Disclaimer: please stay away from Hawaiian shirts. I am Hawaiian so I invoke my right to say this: it’s not a good look. Some can pull it off, but you are probably not one of them.)
Hydration = Rejuvenation
It gets hot in the summer, really hot. Whether you are near the ocean or in Oklahoma, it’s important to drink water, lots and lots of water.
Studies show proper hydration can lead to skin elasticity and help prevent those pesky wrinkles we mentioned above, increase muscle efficiency to keep you energized during those summer months, and help with temperature control.
In other words, drinking cold H20 keeps you cool when you need it the most.
When it’s all said and done, the summer is the best season. In the words of The Fresh Prince, “the weather is hot and [people] are dressing less.” So shave yourself smooth, and stay cool with these helpful hints on how to stay cool under the summer heat.
