0:02
what gender affirming care is and what
0:04
gender affirming care is not
0:07
gender affirming care is age-appropriate
0:09
care that is medically necessary for the
0:12
well-being of many transgender and
0:14
non-binary people who experience
0:16
symptoms of gender dysphoria gender
0:18
dysphoria is distressed that results
0:20
from having one’s gender identity not
0:22
match one sex assigned at birth every
0:25
major medical and mental health
0:27
organization says that it is medically
0:30
necessary to support people in affirming
0:33
their gender identity that’s more than
0:35
1.3 million doctors in the united states
0:38
including the american medical
0:39
association and the american academy of
0:42
pediatrics you should know that
0:44
transition related or gender affirming
0:46
care looks different for every
0:47
transgender and non-binary person
0:49
parents their kids and their doctors
0:52
make decisions together and no medical
0:56
interventions with permanent
0:58
consequences happen until a person is
1:01
old enough to give informed consent so
1:04
what can gender affirming care look like
1:06
for young kids for most youth transition
1:09
is entirely social it might be a new
1:12
name a new hairstyle new clothing
1:15
therapists parents and healthcare
1:17
providers work together to determine
1:20
which changes to make at a given time
1:22
that are in the best interest of the
1:24
child none of this care is irreversible
1:28
and for older youth and adults gender
1:30
transition is a personal process that
1:32
can include changing clothes names and
1:34
pronouns to fit a person’s gender
1:36
identity some people take medication and
1:39
some do not some adults have surgeries
1:42
and others do not how someone
1:44
transitions is entirely their choice to
1:47
be made with their family and their
1:49
doctor what about surgery surgery is
1:52
only for people who can give mature
1:54
informed consent also there’s no such
1:57
thing as the surgery some people need to
2:00
have various kinds of surgery that help
2:02
to reduce the distress and discomfort
2:05
they feel about their body
2:07
many people never have any surgery at
2:10
all
2:10
all gender referring care is
2:13
age-appropriate
2:14
medically necessary supported by all
2:17
major medical associations and in many
2:19
cases life-saving in order to live
2:22
authentically i needed to access care
2:25
i would not be a trans adult if i didn’t
2:27
have the support as a trans kid
2:30
to receive the care that i deserve
2:33
transgender youth who have access to
2:35
gender affirming care have dramatically
2:37
lower rates of depression and
2:39
dramatically lower rates of suicide
2:42
lower rates than with non-transgender
2:44
youth one of the most important things
2:46
that i can say to all folks as a black
2:49
transgender woman
2:50
is that believe us
2:52
believe us when we tell you that we’re
2:54
experiencing distress or when we show
2:56
you that we’re experiencing distress
2:59
believe us when we tell you about our
3:00
gender identities when we feel safe
3:02
enough to do so
3:04
and believe us when we say
3:07
that we need
3:09
gender affirming care
