There are millions of walking sports dictionaries in the world. You know, the guy that can tell you the MVP of the 1966 World Series, or the losing quarterback of the 1990 AFC Championship game. They live, eat and breathe sports. There isn’t anything about it that they don’t like or know about sports.
It’s a passion for them, and everyone around knows it.
However, not everyone knows the person that can tell you the torque specs of a Turbo Fire 350 V-8 in a 1972 Impala. Or they know off the top of their head how to change the timing chain on a 2009 Silverado with a 6.2L. These are the people who you actually think may have gasoline coursing through their veins.
For a sports fan, it’s pretty easy to pick up an almanac or two and memorize quite a bit of information. With a couple of quick web searches, you can find the answers to those first two questions (Frank Robinson, and Jay Schroeder) and seem like a sports genius.
For the car guy, though, it’s not as easy. Hours of digging through old manuals, and endless online “experts” can (and usually do) leave you frustrated. In the automotive world, knowledge is power, and people don’t always like to freely part with it.

Just think, for a moment, about the cost savings potential from knowing the ins and outs of your automobile. Did you know that a simple lack of knowledge can cost you significant money? A repair that you could have made yourself, with the right know-how, can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. According to a recent study a car repair now costs on average $387.31. Then note that the second most common repair costs more than $1,100! That’s just parts and labor!
Add to that the potential of missed work, rental cars costs, and any of the numerous added hassles that can come with a broken down car. You now realize that Mr. Car Encyclopedia is way ahead of the game.
Plus what is more rewarding than doing a job in your garage that most people would never attempt? The satisfaction of being able to fix something with your own two hands is something that far too many people will never experience.
Or, how about the opportunity to be the guy your friends come to with a car problem or question. How about your parents, grandparents, or even your significant other? It really is nice to be the one that people can depend on when they are in a pinch.
By avoiding tow bills, parts markup, diagnostics and the actual labor for the repair, you too could be light years ahead with the proper training. Education is the key because even the best do-it-yourselfers have overspent simply because they didn’t know where to look first.
