A few days back, I was watching the news. There was a story about an underage girl who was pregnant. The person responsible was not a stranger. It was a close relative.
That story stayed with me.
Times have changed. We cannot blindly trust everyone around our children anymore. Not just strangers. Sometimes danger comes from people we know. As parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, or even older siblings, we have to be more aware.
One simple lesson can protect a child.
Teach your kids that safe adults do not ask children to keep secrets.
If someone says, “Don’t tell your parents,” that is a red flag. A big one.
Secrets are for surprise birthdays. They are not for grown-ups acting weird.
Many times, children try to share something. But they are confused. Sometimes they are told to keep it secret. Sometimes they are scared they will get in trouble. And sometimes parents say, “Okay, I won’t tell anyone,” without thinking deeply about it.
Later, when something serious comes out, everyone regrets not paying attention earlier.
We need to listen better.
When your child talks, pause. Look at them. Hear not just the words, but the feeling behind the words.
Abuse does not always look dramatic. It can be physical. It can be emotional. It can be mental. A child may not even know the word for what is happening. They only know that something feels wrong.
Pay attention to behavior changes.
Are they avoiding someone suddenly?
Do they look uncomfortable around a certain person?
Do they refuse to visit a house they once liked?
Are they quieter than usual?
These signs matter.
Ask about their school. Ask about their friends. Talk about their teachers.
Teach them clearly what good touch and bad touch mean. Use simple language. Do not avoid the topic because it feels uncomfortable to you.
Also talk about feelings.
Ask them, “Did anything make you uncomfortable today?”
Tell them it is always okay to say no. Tell them their body belongs to them.
Most important, make sure they know they can tell you anything. Without fear. Without shame. Without punishment.
Children speak when they feel safe. Let your home be that safe place.
Because one honest conversation today can prevent deep regret tomorrow.
