Are you looking too?
—
Are you out there? I’m looking for you, are you looking for me? I know I give up from time to time, it’s hard to search and never find, to not lose hope and keep on going. There are so many rules to this game it makes me despair.
I don’t understand this game, it seems to make things so complicated, but I’m trying to learn in case it makes a difference. They keep telling me dating is a numbers game but I’m only after one person– you. I just don’t know who you are yet. I keep looking from time to time, finding a companion on life’s journey seems so worthwhile. I don’t know who you are or where you will be, I don’t know what you look like or what you do. It seems such a strange way to search, not knowing so much but hoping I will know you when you arrive. Are you out there or am I destined to walk alone having passed you by already, not even knowing who you are?
I have learnt a lot in my life and only those who are vulnerable have such strength as I require.

Are you beautiful? I’m looking for someone beautiful, are you looking for that too? Not the sort of beauty that turns the eye, if we walk this path for life then neither you nor I will survive with looks intact. No, I am looking that beauty that comes with a smile, a beauty that shines brightly in your eyes. It’s the beauty you only see in someone who truly cares for those around them. Formed in the heart with empathy and compassion it burns so fiercely you can’t help but glow. It’s the sort of beauty that can’t be dimmed with age or doused by the vagaries of the world. Are you beautiful? Because how can we find each other if we don’t stand out?
You have faced the worst the world can throw at you and have thrived, learnt lessons no one should need to learn and you know, deep down, that nothing can stop you from being who you are.

Are you brave? I’m looking for someone brave, are you looking for that too? Not the reckless bravery of someone who ill-conceives the consequences of their actions, nor the bravery of someone who risks it all for fame, glory or wealth. No I am after the bravery of the truly courageous, the bravery of someone who can tell their story from their heart laying it bare for all to hear. I have learnt a lot in my life and only those who are vulnerable have such strength as I require. You see I have learnt it takes true bravery to be vulnerable, a willingness to be hurt in daring it all to truly connect with someone. Are you brave? Because how will we connect if neither of us shares our stories?
Are you confident? I’m looking for someone confident, are you looking for that too? Not the confidence born of arrogance, thinking you reign above all. Not the confidence of someone who has never had to truly face their fears. No I am looking for someone with the confidence forged from having lost it all. The confidence that comes from knowing the world can take it all, yet you haven’t given up. You have faced the worst the world can throw at you and have thrived, learnt lessons no one should need to learn and you know, deep down, that nothing can stop you from being who you are. Are you confident? Because how could we walk our path together afraid of what the future may bring?
This search seems so futile, so hard, searching for a needle in an ocean of pins, but how can I give up?

Are you active? I’m looking for someone active, are you looking for that too? Not the activeness of someone endlessly perfecting their body. Not the activeness of someone busy for the sake of being busy. No I’m looking for someone who is active in life. I’m looking for someone whose energy burns with a purpose, someone who needs to make the world a better place. I want to see your passion for living driving you further than you ever believed you could go. Every time we meet I want to hear your tales, your adventures, and see your creations. I desire the activeness of someone prepared to grab life with both hands and be an agent of change. Are you active? Because how can we travel through life standing still?
Are you beautiful, brave, confident and active? Are you out there? This search seems so futile, so hard, searching for a needle in an ocean of pins, but how can I give up? So I keep on searching, pausing from time to time. Maybe I will recognize your smile one day as it lights my world on fire. Maybe I will hear your story on the wind and be drawn to the heart that tells it. Perhaps I will see you struggling one day under the weight of the world, fist held clenched asking if that’s all the world has got. Maybe, just maybe I will see the wake of the changes you have wrought and I will follow that trail wondering who has created such wonders. Are you out there? Find me if you dare and know that I am looking for you.
*A minstrel was a medieval European bard who performed songs whose lyrics told stories of distant places or of existing or imaginary historical events. Although minstrels created their own tales, often they would memorize and embellish the works of others. The Modern Minstrel observes the world around him and shares it with us as lyrical story. This series was inspired by Luke Davis, whose eye for story and ear for lyrical prose are featured here.
