Have you seen death? asks Dr Swaraj as I glance up at him. A retired doctor in his late seventies, Dr Swaraj spends his time meditating, reading or wandering around his massive home in Palakkad, South India.
“I have seen lives leaving bodies; so I believe in the existence of souls,” he says, explaining his interest in Tibetan theories and the paranormal. A father of two, he tells me that old age is perhaps the most difficult of all phases in life. “It’s a time when you are prone to feeling unwanted and alone, but if you nurture a good relationship with your partner, you can survive this stage without much heartache.”
Dr Swaraj says that holistic wellbeing is indispensable to a good life. Physical health is inextricably linked to emotional happiness, and unless a man is able to reign in his mind and heart, bodily health will always remain out of reach. “Meet others, be active, and communicate,” he says.
