Sometimes it feels like the creators of shows for kids create them with a darker purpose: to see how close the show can bring parents to the brink of insanity. And some of them are incredibly successful at that darker purpose.
And somehow, my sons have an internal radar that finds just the right show. The shows with annoying voices or horribly behaved main characters (often disguised as being cute) are the worst (I’m looking at you, Caillou and Masha and Bear). There are several on Netflix I wish I could hide from my kids’ eyesight every time we’re on it.
However, there are more and more shows that appeal to parents and kids. The storyline is entertaining and easy for kids to follow, but there’s a subplot that goes right over their heads. And that subplot is often what is most interesting to parents. My youngest has watched Troll Hunter on Netflix approximately five times through since last summer. And I don’t mind it too much. The storyline is good. The lessons are solid. Even on the fifth viewing, I don’t think I’ve seen every episode (which also helps my sanity). Another household favorite is Teen Titans. Similar to movies like Shrek, there is a lot of comedic moments that go right over the kid’s head, but are hilarious to adults. However, after a few episodes, my brain starts to hurt.
To be completely honest, I will take a Disney movie over any of their shows any day of the week. Old or new, it doesn’t matter. Even as an adult, there’s something magical in Disney movies that speaks right to my heart. Plus, there are generally songs, which I can then sing loudly to embarrass my sons.
Do you have any go to shows or movies for your younger children? Are there any that are instant no’s in your house?
