The 39-year-old insurgent was elected as a moderate, independent candidate who could provide smarts, stability and a new beginning, with France rejecting the far-right nationalist stance of his opponent, Marine Le Pen. In May, Macron’s approval ratings hit 64 percent, but three months later, he sits at 36 percent approval in his home country. Forbes notes that three-quarters of his Cabinet have never held political office, and his communications team has struggled to get his message out. He has also come under fire, according to NPR, for chopping a housing stipend used by students, cutting taxes on the super-rich, dressing down a military leader and spending some 30,000 euros on makeup over the past three months. His drop in support is “faster than for any French leader in decades,” according to the BBC. The news is even worse among English-speaking Social, where Macron has a 31 percent positive score over the last two weeks. While that sentiment includes stories about his downfall, which in itself is not a negative response to his actions in office, it’s clear that Macron has his work cut out for him as he heads into the fall. –Alex Shultz
